18	Studies show that fraternities are beneficial to men's mental health. So why do so many people hate fraternities? I'm a Freemason. There are plenty of non-greek fraternities around, but most/all of them have had severe drops in membership over the past 50 years. Masons, Oddfellows, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Moose, Elk, Kiwanis, Pythians etc, all still exist, but the numbers are down. The Masons, as an organization, are explicitly non-political. We're forbidden to discuss partisan politics in lodge. Individual Masons reflect the politics of their locale an demographic. You're talking generally older, established men, so in the US, individual politics tends conservative. You don't need a prior connection. You can just ask a Mason you know about joining. You can also literally knock on the door of a lodge when there's someone there, and express interest. However, it's sometimes easier to make contact through the local Grand Lodge; Google 'Grand Lodge of <state>'. My benefits have been ethical teaching, meeting a far wider variety of men than I would other wise, mentoring, and a stable quiet place in my life. The process varies a bit from place to place, but if you don't know a Mason, it would involve contacting a lodge or Grand Lodge and inquiring about joining. 1	Fraternal organizations I assume you mean the Shriners. Sects? No. There are ‘appendent bodies’ which you can choose to join after becoming a Mason, but they are not mutually exclusive. The relationship to the core “symbolic lodge” is more like that of the Chess Club or Band to the sponsoring high school; extras you can take, but don’t have to. 2	Thoughts on freemasons? Nearly all lodges get their dues from members in a single annual payment. This is typically sometime in the fall. Dues vary widely, but are typically under $200/year. [Another Mason] Generally speaking, we'd like you to have a fixed address, and be fairly settled, and some evidence you can support the (modest) dues 'without injury to yourself or family'. Some jurisdictions have minimum residency periods. Becoming a Mason is a protracted process. In the US the fastest it normally runs is several months, with all interaction being with the same lodge, at the same location. Myself, I'm my lodge's Ritualist, so I know the ceremonies inside and out, and train and coach others, as well as take part myself. That's my thing.
