I rented a room in someone's condo for a few months and then I got an apartment for myself after. My roommate taught me a lot about being a single man. I started doing pretty much anything with my roommate, coworkers, and friends as long as it was not too big a risk to me, I think this behavior was key for me personally. Eventually I went out by myself often, made more friends, focused on work, dated for years, bought myself a home, and got married again.

If you can, do not agree to permanent support, limit it in time and quantity. You can give more in person but you cannot take it back legally, easily.

I was like you, I went straight into the meetup or date plans quickly. If they are too confused or broken to do that, then forget them. I became this way after, like you, trying to have a decent conversation and be a decent person to them. Even dates became weird; they gave me crap for my lifestyle or they wanted to give themselves to me like it was a job. In the end, I met my current wife on one by essentially inviting myself out with her and it worked out for us both. I did date someone I met …

I spent the first few years agreeing to do nearly anything with friends/coworkers as long as it was legal, was not going to hurt me, and would not financially ruin me. Doing new things, in new places, with different people made a huge difference for me. I worked out just enough to be reasonably fit, took on some bad habits, and did whatever brought me joy (within reason).

Yes, this is exactly how mine went. I think it would have helped if she had not been nuts. Nothing against the therapist for trying, she just saw what was really in her room. Frankly, I think the therapist was as scared of my ex.

I told my boss and definitely had many days of my flakiness for a few weeks. They were very flexible with me and it was probably years prior to COVID. I kept it brief and did not get into all the personal business. I did talk to a couple therapists and that helped me deal with the immediate and ongoing drama that occurred, I was able to get back to working strong within a month and did well enough leading up to that. I had developed a lot of talent and skill by then, worked with younger punks, a…

I would make sure that you have even pickup and dropoff responsibilities with her. I had trouble with my ex because I had both responsibilities during much of the year and she would use it to make it difficult for me. The lawyers missed that one. It was not a far distance but a few other unclear holes in our policy were exploited by her to make my relationship with my kid difficult and missed time for us.

I hope not, but if we do, then you deserve her. Haha! I hope not.

I imagine you will get a few positive responses here, count me in, past experience. 👍

My ex married a month or so ahead of the 2 year limit on alimony. She did not even tell me, a mediator explained it in response to another case the ex created (and lost), she paid me back. Good luck, I hope it works out.

My ex did this to me; she used it to harass me, a girlfriend, her family, and the girlfriend's ex husband. I could have likely got the police involved but I did not because I was pretty much broke, broken, separated, and very confused by everything going on. It became worse after she filed a family court case against me using gps information gathered and the misguided information she collected from my daughter about it. I was broke and my life was a wreck at this time. The family court really di…

Yes, this pain will pass, your future will be great. Take care of yourself now and in the future.

Not to say there is clear guilt but it is not a good start for either of you to be lacking trust. You can be honest about your feelings with her, have a good discussion, and be prepared for it to go either direction at the end, your choice. If there are more fish available, maybe go fishing. I have been jealous or unhappy at times with my current wife and more with my XW, the XW is still proving me right and the current is proving to be better. So no judgement from me on your feelings (I have be…

I meant that you only give what you have to, no more. Mine promised all sorts and followed through with none and made a bad situation worse. I should have reacted more, and I should have taken far more time with my kid. It sounds like you have the right idea, do not give in to her wants and desires, don't let her take advantage.

I did not handle it well, so I will give you some wisdom. It sounds like you described my ex closely. Take everything you can, including the kids. Give her as little as you can. Because once that is judge approved you will have no other choice. I would have rather given to good behavior than given to bad behavior because I legally had to. The courts do not care and attorneys are great but ultimately they need your money, in my case. Make sure custody or visitation are clear. Financials probably …

SC divorcee myself. I hope your luck is better than mine but I would get a good lawyer now and take everything you can because you can always give some back but never take it. This includes children, I have not seen mine in years and the mother has made her file a request for a visitation change, now so I have nothing. I do not know that I will ever have a relationship with my kid again. Oh, and we divorced because of my wife's affair, so do not bank on that. At least $20k spent so far and I wis…

Only one motorcycle? You can have many more! Seriously though, no way do I reflect on what she would think about my spending behavior. I figure I will die working too but I do contribute to 401k, Roth, have a home, etc (the prototypical middle-income American way). Don't blow it all on hookers and cocaine you know.

It has been 2 years now; I feel like a failure, I am often awake at night thinking about it, I worry about her health and safety, I worry about who she will become and how this will impact her as an adult (the mother and her family all have personality issues in my eyes), I worry that the stepfather might abuse her, I follow the news to make sure her and the mother/stepfather are not in it. So not coping very well, mine is nearly an adult now, but it sounds like your children are younger which i…

After 3 years of that and my child no longer speaks to me, act now before it is too late.

Man or woman, you got blindsided and that sucks. I am glad that you do not have children because that means you need only split your assets and go your separate ways. You will learn from this and most likely find more happiness afterward. Merry Christmas, happy new year, and life is only going to be better.

I was the same age (6 years ago) and for similar reasons, though there was no hope for resolution on either side. I gave everything to my family and sacrificed a lot of myself for their benefit. So my advice is that you be selfish and do whatever TF you want, have fun, do things you would not do before, and do not live to anyone else's standards. But you also need to take care of business for your future. If you have children then take all the custody you can and protect your assets. Like others…

Record everything you legally can. If you have never been arrested for abuse, or have previous history to suggest it, and you file, then you should be fine. Listen to your lawyer. You are likely correct about the future with her, she will probably be the worst human on earth to you and if you have children, she will probably file fraudulent cases of abuse, and will likely alienate your children. So take everything you can; the home, the kids, child support, everything. You can always give her ba…

It is way too early, meet some people and you will find there are a whole lot of people who you can have great, if not better, companionship with. And what I think is far more important is that she wanted this and even if you did get back with her, it would almost certainly end the same. My father married the same woman twice and it ended the same. Move on and be happy that you can still be friendly with her, my opinion.

This is a big nope, she needs to refinance or transfer the loan or something. She may have good intent but you would still be responsible for the loan and have no stake in the home. During a refinance, a quit claim deed may be required but the closing attorney should provide you a contingency on it where it only takes affect after the home is refinanced.

This! I made the mistake of not taking custody of my child and instead settling for visitation. Long story short; I could care less about the cheating after she alienated my child, filed a fraudulent family court case while I was taking care of my father immediately after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and now my child will not speak to me. Get over the cheating, she sucks and it happens, the marriage is over, protect your rights as a father. Women are all over the place, no need to worr…

I think a good summarization, and true for me, was too stay busy. When I was idle, I would dwell and become depressed. Alcohol made it worse, so I kept it social. I found new hobbies and projects, that keeps me busy. Also, pretty certain my ex has a series of personality disorders, minimizing communication with her to the absolute minimum helped immensely. It is going to take time and it may come and go in waves but it does get better.

Consider what your custody, visitation will be and the co-parenting relationship with your to-be-ex. If that looks good then I would leave her, there are so many women. If it looks like trouble (take as much custody as you can) and leave her, or stay with her as long as you can tolerate it for the children. The choice is up to you in the end.

I have only seen my teen daughter once in more than a year. I love her so much and I tried to be a good father after divorce but her mother is pure evil and my daughter has completely estranged herself from me. I pray she comes back but I do not know.
