As a STEM graduate myself, I can attest to that. The subjects and tests have been watered down to accomodate and cater to that kind of people. As long as you memorize a bunch of stuff you don't even need to understand and transcribe it on the tests, you're fine. Who cares if you'll ever think about those things again.

I hate bureaucracy, and I live in the most bureaucratic country in the world, the shithole that is Brazil. It is not only an obstacle here, it's also a trap. There's always some obscure law someone may find you are infringing at any given time, and more often than not, authorities are corrupt and you have no recourse against them, you are never safe. I never tried meditation as you described, but I can see how it can be beneficial. In my case, I achieved an awareness of my thoughts by consciously recognizing them, knowing where they come from and putting them aside. Now that I wrote it, it sounds a lot like meditation, just with a different mechanism.

I'm not a buddhist, but I think The Buddha made the correct observations. Suffering comes from desiring, I interpret desire as a call to satisfy our animalistic instincts. Get rid of desire, override the lizard brain, and you get rid of suffering. That is a challenging task, however, and I think can only be achieved through meditation, either the buddhist kind or, in my case, through thinking and rumination.

I had the impression that Walter is one of the few characters that couldn't let go of his morals.
