In NZ single-sex floors are rare. Australia has some purely single sex hostels but the great majority are mixed. Some have a strong individual culture but I don't know how much they correspond to US frats and sororities. There is still a great deal of drinking and rooting accomplished here, but I'd guess living fulltime in a mixed environment helps the kids to treat each other as human.
