I personally think it makes sense to use the word "war" for this, and allow the word to refer to conflicts other than those with physical weapons. If I were a school teacher and asked for essays giving the title, "The Consequences of War", do you think that even one pupil would write anything about "class wars", "trade wars" or "gender wars"? The term, if presented without context, is clearly understood to mean armed conflict. The problem with (and indeed intent of) newspeak is to hijack the emo…

war (wôr): n. A state of open, armed, often prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties. I have been annoyed for about two years by the continuous insistence of Richard Stallmann to correct people speaking to him on the use of words, to the point where sympathetic people were put off by his confrontational behavior. It seemed to be a tactical mistake, insisting on the correct use of words over attracting potential supporters. I have changed my mind. If words are used in thi…

This is a cliche murder case. Wife gets bored with husband, has affair with career criminal. He suggests getting rid of husband, supplies gun. Wife kills husband, boyfriend and his gang depose body. Falls walked up to her husband, and in front of her two girls, placed the pistol against his temple and fired. With the children watching. That is seriously messed up, even in the realm of murderers.

The occupation of Afghanistan is more popular, because unlike the invasion of Iraq, the invasion of Afghanistan was seen as a defensive war by the US population. I guess, if more people knew that Mullah Omar offered an extradition if evidence against the accused was presented, that would be different. This is also why almost nobody knows it. Not many people are keen on fighting a war to protect girls schools in the mountains of central Asia, and that the politicians who orchestrated it give a sh…

To be fair, you can't blame Thatcher for that. The Argentinian military really invaded an Island full of people who didn't want to be Argentinians and who were quite happy to be defended. It's one the harder wars to argue against in world history. If you do, you either know more backstory than me or you are a pacifist. ps: I have typed this comment while listening to "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead", which should give you an idea about my general opinion of Margret Thatcher.
