Understand politics. You can be the best person for the job but will be overlooked if you don't understand office politics. "It's not what you know but who you blow" rings very true. Don't be a kiss ass but if you are completely ignorant of the social dynamics at play it will be to your detriment. Go to lunch with your boss. Stay late and engage in small talk. Sometimes the real meeting where the decisions are made is not the one in the conference room.

To add to this, I know a divorced mom that 'lives at home' and 'can't find a job'. She collects alimony and child support, gets welfare and has medicare. But in reality she lives at her boyfriends nice house on the water and drives a BMW. On paper she keeps her parents address so she can keep her single mom benefits. She does nails and waxes hair for cash so has no reported income. The system has to change...
