I don't know if this is accurate. I'm Canadian and my income tax deductions are based mostly on income brackets. Marital status does change the deductions from income but not as much as you're saying. I'm single and for the 2017 tax year I lost 15% of my income to income taxes. And being single also affects women's taxes. I have a couple female friends that are doctors and they pay exorbitant amounts of taxes.

The short answer is that you need to come to a point where you don't feel like you're obligated to talk to them or see them for months at a time; and to not regret or worry about it when you get to that point. I'm at that point and it has actually made my relationship with my parents better. It'll be a decent visit or chat on the phone once every few months. I live 10 minutes away by car and I've only received light banter about never calling or visiting.
