If it is anything like this wine festival I went to (I had never had wine before and didn't know jack shit) just be honest. I would Tell them you are just now delving into your artistic nature and ask what inspires them about that painting, or what emotions it brings up, if you are looking for specific openers.

For me it all boiled down to investing more on my opinion of myself then their opinions of me. Once I did that it became a lot easier to control my feelings for them early on.
