Japan is modern in some senses but extremely conservative in others. Men dominate there. Everyone has a place in society that is determined not by their own actions but by outside forces. Generally the Japanese are not kind to outsiders (race, national origin, even rugged individualists). They don't see the US as having many of these same problems.
