Oh yes, 0 women whatsoever want to do manual labor, that's not a bullshit generalization at all. I think the same can be said of men though. Who the hell is actually slap happy about having to do a bunch of hired from the neck down heavy lifting bullshit for nearly minimum wage?

Hmm they shouldn't mess with your food etc. no matter what views you hold. Obviously not going there is good. The problem is that it's not a big enough deal to mount a huge campaign about without looking petty. I'd say avoid smear campaigns etc. they do tend to have some blowback as the public doesn't like them. Log it. Document it. Possibly post it. But don't let it ruin your life. (Fwiw I'm a Feminist, but this shouldn't happen to anyone)

I don't see the big problem in trying. The Christian and atheist sub reddits raised money for charity together once. Edit: I think one thing that both sides can agree on is that it's terrible to watch children have to suffer with pain that we cannot always control, confronting their own mortality on a very intimate level on a daily basis. It's terrible. When I was a kid I loved playgrounds, and being hooked up to a bunch of machines in a hospital bed all day, dealing with a rotating cavalcade of…

Actually a few studies have shown that when people can find common ground, even on really dumb and simple things like "I like chips." "Hey, I like chips too!" there is a statistical increase in their ability to reach mutually satisfactory decisions. There is a problem in being only focused on the issues at hand because that is never the only thing we bring to the table. Introducing even the simplest sense of trust and psychological safety CAN influence the outcome of the decision making process …

I think it would be cool if feminists and MRAs could find some set of issues they agree on and work together around that. Maybe it's just raising money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, it doesn't have to be related to gender at all, but curbing hostility and investing in more peaceful and understanding relations seems like a good idea. I don't have any illusions about this uniting the whole community, or leading to any kind of sea change, but it would be a good first step toward understanding…

To literally completely make up an answer here I'd say it has a biological basis. Over their lifetime women produce a set number of eggs. Maybe we can't be surgically precise in how many, but you can ball park it pretty well. Men on the other hand produce quite literally bajillions of little swimmers in a single day alone. This is an acknowledged medical science fact. Thus, if we look at things through an economic lens we can understand there is a scarcity issue. If we want to keep the human rac…

Well the issue with depression is that we've seen it can effect various systems, the question whether that all happens in tandem is another story. There is kind of a broad range of what can pass for depression, so in the lighter cases you might find only a few of the symptoms. Maybe colors are duller and food doesn't taste as good, but pain doesn't hurt as much. In the more clinical cases though, yes.

Well, we are getting closer actually. There was an interesting study I heard about that got published, as I recall, in the New England Journal of Medicine, where they had people with chronic pain get in an MRI machine and rate their pain level, first while simply being in pain, and second while looking at a picture of an ex-partner. The idea here is that the increased pain that they reported could be subtracted from the relatively stable base pain reported before, and thus we could in some sense…

Yeah. I would say though that developmental psychologists have found that young girls tend to have very little physical aggression. Initially they actually thought women just weren't aggressive because research in the field repeatedly showed dramatically lower rates of physical and verbal (name calling) violence. It was only once they included social dimensions that they found women were frequently as aggressive as boys, it was just that the method of expression was different. Similarly, Raymond…

So correct my thinking. How do men not account for the majority of violent crime? I'm looking for the reasoned response here, and I'm wiling to listen. If you're going to downvote me for inquiring, well, there goes any hope I guess.

I think it is good to consider what privileges, even if they are marginal, may exist for other groups. A lot of time is spent fussing over white priv, male priv, hetero priv, cis priv, able priv, etc. I think it is wrong to suggest that priv begins and ends there. I think women have a privilege surrounding their sexuality whereby it is more socially acceptable for a woman to claim she is bisexual, and it is more likely to be believed as such. Women too don't face the same level of stigma men do …

I don't agree with you. "...without evidence, a male-to-female threat of rape, is assumed to be something that man could be/is capable of without there needing to be sufficient evidence to warrant concern." Threats are threats. If someone feels threatened by someone shouting that they are going to rape them and they press charges, that is their right, and one I fully support. The same applies to murder or any of the BARK felonies, or property damage, etc. If they don't feel like pressing charges…

There is no attempt to "dismiss the problems as nitpicking". When I say, "There is also the issue of definitions of rape varying across jurisdictions which makes the issue a bit harder to pin down aside from all of the usual nitpicking confounds you can bring up." The "nitpicking" refers to other possible confounds that make have influenced the process but which, I presume, would not have been that big of a deal. I don't think it means anything, because the bulk of those claims are not the same as those linked in the OP, and really the one in the OP is more of grandstanding internet tough guy ploy than anything. I disagree with the claim in your question that society as a whole accepts death threats more than rape to any significant degree. I also don't agree with the claim your question presupposes that society as a whole believes rape to be more heinous than murder. I'd appreciate it you you actually m…

Well the CDC data and the BJS data are about a year apart, and use different methods. There is also the issue of definitions of rape varying across jurisdictions which makes the issue a bit harder to pin down aside from all of the usual nitpicking confounds you can bring up. We can fiddle about finding the right numbers, but again, and I've said this a few times now, I think the rate of sexual assault is higher than that of death threats and this can serve to explain some of what we see in the o…

Murder accounts for only 1 percent of crime, I heard this in an introductory Criminal Justice class, but no I don't have the source. The point is, murder occurs with far less frequency than rape, and the word has a long history of being used loosely. Rape on the other hand, well that happens a lot more.
/r/MensRights02/03/14 04:01 PM

The CDC has the lifetime rate of occurrence at about 18%. The Bureau of Justice (PDF)[http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/fvsv9410.pdf] I've been scanning goes to 2010 and has the number at around 250,000.

Well "kill" is used far more loosely in common paralance than "rape". "I'd kill to get a [commodity]!" etc. I think this is why saying "I'm going to rape you/her/him/etc." is taken more seriously. Also, at some level it's about what people are comfortable with. You can report somebody for saying they're going to kill you though. I've actually had to do this before, IRL.
/r/MensRights02/03/14 03:34 PM

This is a strawman argument. Since you were reluctant to provide a source for your claim I googled it. What I found suggested the rate is closer to 1 in 5. I believe that the incidence of women being the victims of sexual assault or rape is greater than that of death threats of associated parties to the accused offender. My original post posits an explanation for the phenomena. It is descriptive, not normative.

I believe that the rate of sexual assault that women face is markedly higher than the rate of death threats.
/r/MensRights02/03/14 03:11 PM

I think a lot of it has to do with the prevalence of rape versus death threats, what with one in four women surviving rape or attempted rape. I haven't seen stats on the death threats for associated partied of sexual assault, but I imagine they are much lower population wise. Even the most militant hardline super scary boogey man lesbian feminists I've known don't advocate violence against offenders or their families.
/r/MensRights02/03/14 02:57 PM
2

Possibly. The worry is that in the case of an actual assault the "recording" would silence or otherwise discredit the victim which I'm sure nobody is in support of. We could also argue that this exacerbates the problem of people being less likely to report sexual assault which already happens for a number of reasons. There are already problems with abusers who sneak by via technicalities, and the possibility of discrediting a legitimate victim and consequently crediting a legitimate offender are…

This is a problem that is slowly being addressed. I have volunteered with a local sexual assault etc. services center and a large part of their training involves explaining to people that women are not the only victims of rape. We spent a lot of time in training discussing how male rape is very likely to be under reported because of similar issues arising from stigma about what men "should be". Further, I took a Psychology of Women class in college as part of getting my Women's Studies minor, an…

I think the key difference is between personal preferences and acting as if X kind of body or body part is "bad". You can like what you like and dislike what you dislike, that's fine, but things like the "No Fat Chicks" t-shirt, even if meant in jest do, at least in our current social climate, contribute to all of the stresses that women face regarding body image (no doubt men have their own stresses and pressures to, as do trans people and everyone under the rainbow) This also eventually calls …

I don't think the problem is Feminism. Fun fact, we more often say Feminisms, with an 's' on the end because the list of sub-feminisms is incredibly long, and not all of them agree with each other about everything. Why is fault placed on an ideology, and not the individual making poor choices?

The name change is a decent argument, but this isn't the best critique of marriage I've seen. For the time she was in Beauvoir did a pretty good critique. Naturally, this is written from a slanted perspective and paints the picture such that A) The "safcrifices" are made only by women and B) They are sacrifices at all. A lot of this is easy to argue against because it's not constructed with or subjected to a lot of scrutiny, and even then, not the best kind. In short, this is shit to such a degr…

This is hampered by two fundamental misconceptions. 1) Wired matters. No it doesn't. It's a dumb magazine that spends an inordinate amount of time covering high profile web drama that no one in their right mind cares about.
