Thanks for your kind words. I have done my best to be careful and methodical with this project, so I'm happy that comes through and I appreciate that you took the time to say something. I see your point about the potential meaning of the different degree of variation in top-ranked issues between MRAs and non-MRAs. Do you mind if I quote you in an edit to the piece? I find your interpretation compelling, so I would like to include it. I will attribute the idea to you, of course - by name or anony…

Does Title IX not cover scholarships? My impression was that it did (and not just athletic scholarships). I found this article about professor Mark Perry that seems to confirm that idea. It looks like Title IX is the vehicle he's used to successfully challenge hegemonic female preference in education assistance. So maybe the key there is to take his precedent and run with it? As for healthcare, I have one very specific idea that I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on. I think it would make s…

Let's talk about those topics. I agree they are important. Can you identify specific ways that there is a mismatch in funding between the sexes in education or healthcare, and/or do you know of any policy initiatives that would address them?

Thanks for the feedback. I have to say I found the written responses very compelling. I will think about the comparison across multiple dimensions like expert/lay status, MRA/non, and age cohort. I expect that analysis could get complicated very quickly. Also, depending on the number of participants belonging to each relevant subsample, comparisons might not be very insightful. It is certainly worth investigating, though.

You're right! Did the researchers tell you any details about the presentation? I'm interested in the scale and background of the potential audience that their presentation reached.

Good question. I didn't define any of the terms that people could select in this part of the survey (aside from explaining what acronyms meant). To be honest, I had no idea there was a formal Egalitarian movement. I went into this thinking that people must have been identifying with the term egalitarian based on its dictionary definition rather than its relation to any specific movement, but maybe I am wrong. The data from Part 1 of the series indicate that the bulk of participants are moderate …

It doesn't strike me as likely that a person would anonymously identify as a Pickup Artist out of a desire for bragging rights. I don't disagree that Pickup Artist is a label inherently disrespectful to the people being picked up, but I am not a PUA (and I'm guessing you are not either?).
/r/MensRights13/03/19 05:17 PM

Although most people are familiar with those terms as insults, they originate from communities who actually identify with the labels.

I've just changed the clause in that sentence to "...while another person may think that feminists are exclusively interested in bettering women's lot to the detriment of men and children". What do you think of that?
/r/MensRights12/03/19 07:41 PM

I would like to see them do so, because I think that there could be some common ground established between the groups. It would be great if some opportunities for collaboration and broader activism could arise out of such a study. However, it is likely there would not be very much consistency between the research they'd do and this study given that they would have been created by different people (and I'm not sure they would agree to using the topics on the men's rights wiki page as their source…

I think I see what you mean, about what I wrote with respect to feminism. I'm afraid I must have communicated my thoughts poorly in the blog post, because when I offered the alternative "while another person may think that feminists are exclusively interested in bettering women’s lot," I was trying to reference a perspective like the one you just voiced. I guess it sounds a bit milquetoast, the way I put it, because I was hoping to avoid being overly controversial. Due to the sadly controversial…

The total sample collected was 386. After applying exclusion criteria (see here), the sample for analysis was 231. While writing this post, one person was excluded for having categorized him/herself as both feminist and anti-feminist - so as of now the sample size is 230.

You must not live in the West if you think identity politics accomplishes nothing. It's often not any good that it accomplishes, but it sure does accomplish things. To bring it back to this survey, is there no possible use for data concerning the relative proportion of people engaging on this sub who may be MRAs, feminists, incels, or otherwise?
/r/MensRights12/03/19 02:59 PM
8

That's a great idea. I tried almost an inverse of that in my survey when I asked participants to prioritize issues that concern the MRM - trying to get at the question of where it may be most fruitful to put forth movement effort as a function of the will to tackle different issues. I had hoped to compare this sub to Men's Lib, but their mods declined to allow me to conduct a survey there.

Your critique about a women's rights activist label is fair. However, isn't it likely that a person who is anti-feminist, yet believes in the equality of the sexes, likely also ticked the box next to egalitarian? I do think it might have been useful to see how many people might have ticked WRA who did or did not tick MRA, but I suspect there would probably be huge overlap between WRA and egalitarians. I think this is because both feminist and MRA refer to group membership of specific social move…

No, I hadn't run across that study. Those are very interesting findings. Has anyone done a retrospective analysis of the articles linked on r/mensrightslinks? Here is a paper from Sweden that briefly looks into that question. It doesn't compare the Big Five directly with feminist ideology, but you might get a kick out of Table 2 nonetheless. For another paper that might provide a bit of insight (also not looking at the Big Five in relation to feminism), see this paper on left wing authoritarianism. It's unfortunate that nobody has published research on that specific question to better inform the discussion (or, at least, I did not find any papers deal…

That's a fair point. It's a shame there isn't a source on reddit in general to discern that. Whether it is the case that this pattern of results is true of reddit in general, though, at least there's now hard evidence that it is true of this sub. Edit: plural verb should have been singular.

You could be on to something. I believe one of the mods suggested a similar method of selecting important people, but - if I recall correctly - their suggestion was more geared toward making sure that all of those people were identified strictly correctly, rather than looking at how some were mislabeled. I just did a bit of checking, and it seems like some of the figures on the Check Scale are more or less well-known in unexpected ways. For example, I too thought that Alison Tieman would be a ve…

I share your intuition about the element of intellectual curiosity involved in questioning dominant social narratives. If you recall (assuming you took the survey), there was a chunk of questions dealing with the way people approach new information and problem solving. That scale is the Five-Dimensional Curiosity Scale (5DC), which I administered to investigate what you mentioned - whether folks in the MRM are particularly curious people. I will present that data in a later installment, and I'm …

I think it's a matter of focus. MRAs and members of those other groups often rail against common enemies, but for different reasons. My impression is that MRAs want what is best for men/boys because they see males as intrinsically valuable in equal measure to every other type of person. On the other hand, groups like incels and PUAs seem to just be looking for what they can get out of women. By regressives, do you mean traditionalists? If so, I think that - while there are probably some traditio…

Thank you for the feedback. There are details here about what answers I determined to be correct for each person on the Check Scale along with my rationale. That post also has details about how many people were excluded from analysis based on their scores on the Check Scale. I think your criticism of the measure is very fair, and that is part of why I decided to go the route of including as many people as possible and using the lay vs. expert distinction. The criteria I set prior to data collect…

I welcome your objection, but here are my counterpoints. While you're right that in reality the categories of feminist and MRA are not mutually exclusive, they were in the survey. Participants could only choose one of three options, so the trick of the scale was determining the best answer. When faced with a person whose conduct suggests both feminist and MRA, but who identifies herself as a feminist, I think it's reasonable to determine that the best answer is in line with the way she identifie…

Sorry, I didn't mean that either statement was erroneous in its factual accuracy. I use that word more figuratively than I should. I meant that it doesn't seem to fit the writers' intended message. Like the reference to homeless women, it's pointing out that a proportionally smaller subset of the population of interest (DV murder victims/homeless people) belongs to a relevant victim class (male/female). It stuck out to me because it is the only statistic on the page relating to sex differences t…

I'm on board with showing the counter to the traditional feminist narrative (i.e., highlighting male victimization) as a method of providing balance in the realm of domestic violence. I'm even sympathetic to your point that the mainstream narrative precludes male victims of IPV-related homicide. I don't agree that there is no equivalence, however. The equivalence lies in the fact that this is an erroneous statistic that does not help to further the message that men and boys are equally human and…

Is this organization intended to be an unbiased victim advocate, or a purposefully male-focused advocate? There's no purpose statement on the site, and the name seems to imply the former, but I can't help but feel like one of the references on the True Statistics page is unlike the others. Australian men effectively making up 25% of the homicide victim numbers of intimate partner violence (Australian Institute of Criminology 2015 p.3). Have you had a glimpse at the blog? It's only got four posts, the most-recent of which looks like a bad parody of feminist publishing. I'm a little bit scared to think that they are seriously suggesting that Signs has anything near the rigor, merit, or prestige of Science. I'm not sure what caused them not to be on board. I communicated with one mod who told me that he would speak with the other mods about it, but that I should expect the answer to be a no because they are generally skeptical of people who want to conduct research on the sub. No, I am not a feminist. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're curious why I've said my hands are tied with regard to structure of some of the measures in the survey. Is that right? If so, that is because other people created these scales. For anyone who is attempting to do that with psychometric validity (or even the pretense of it), that is a fairly intensive process. It involves creating a scale with quite a few items, collecting a large sample, testing which items (if any) clump togethe…

Of course! I am concerned with many issues facing men and boys, as I know MRAs are. At the same time, I am aware of the way many MRAs are presented within popular media and within academic scholarship. An interesting common element to the representation in these domains - beyond their almost exclusive negativity - is the surprising lack of empirical foundation for damaging allegations against MRAs and the MRM. What little empirical work has been done has largely been filtered through a feminist …

You're right, there's no guarantee that I can avoid bias. However, there are ways to assess whether it is present, and if it is so subtle as to avoid detection then there is no way of knowing. That is a danger we take whenever we attempt to gain knowledge that is not strictly mathematical, and I don't find it to be a compelling argument against making the attempt. I am aware of how popular media generally depicts MRAs and any place where they gather. I don't doubt that there are people motivated…

This kind of logic is precisely why I bash surveys especially political ones so often. I know it's probable that you have not taken a glance to check, but this is not a political survey. It is largely a demographic survey that also looks at some cognitive variables (personality and curiosity, for example) and seeks opinions about the most important issues facing men and boys. Good question. Some elements of the survey were designed in consultation with the mods with that particular concern in mind. I established a priori criteria for "passing" such elements, to determine whose data should be included in analysis and whose should not. If the results of testing for inclusion based on those standards proves to be too stringent or too loose, I may re-evaluate and shift the criteria.

That's a fair criticism of the scale. I made use of this scale, despite the improvements that could be made to it, because I have some predictions about the phenomenon it purports to measure. I'm unfortunately limited in resources, so I have neither the time nor the funds to develop and validate my own scale for this purpose. Anyway, thank you for your time!

I apologize for the poor formatting for mobile. I hadn't anticipated that as a problem, so I didn't check it before publishing the survey. Thank you for letting me know about it, though.

I just reread the thread and apparently you won't post a link to your blog because you are worried about biasing the results. While that's fair enough as it goes, it rather makes your response that the results will be posted on your blog rather pointless and useless. If you read that portion then you probably also read the rest of the sentence, in which I said that I'm happy to provide a link to anyone who asks. You can also trawl through my post history, if you care to, because I've linked the …

I hope it's not! It should still be up and working. What browser are you using? When I checked on my computer using Chrome I was able to load it.

I have a post on my blog that links to my pre-registration for this study, so I feel reticent to link it here. I am worried that making it too readily available might lead to some people reading it before taking the study (and thus potentially introducing bias into their answers once they know my hypotheses). I will message you with a link, though. Anyone else who is curious to see it can message me for a link as well.

I'd place a very conservative (i.e., longer than it will probably take) estimate at two weeks from today, 2/6. I will also post a link to write ups that I do as I upload them to the blog.

Absolutely. I plan to share the results through my blog. It will probably come in stages as I do the analyses, but I will share all of the information here.

I just meant that I hope you are pleased with the lack of ideological agenda in my work, that's all. I appreciate the warning. I don't think this will rise quite to the same level of fame (infamy?) as Cassie Jaye's work, so my guess is that I will not face too much backlash.

Thank you for your time. I certainly understand skepticism towards academia in a place that is not particularly feminist-approved, but I hope that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you for your feedback about the survey, and for your words of advice about the sub. I was in communication with the mods before releasing this survey, and they raised the same concern about potential brigading. I hope that the safeguards I implemented in consultation with them do the trick!

So the mere presence of a consent form is not sufficient. I followed the link and saw the form, it's still rather vague... This is an unfortunate necessity for consent forms. It's very tricky to strike a balance between giving participants an idea of what they're getting into and keeping things vague enough not to bias responses based on either A) foreknowledge of the specific scales and measures used, or B) accidentally cuing hypotheses and expectations. The consent process is a bit of a catch …

The measure you're referring to was created and developed by other researchers, so my hands are tied a bit with regard to structure. Also, thanks for editing your comment.

For those who wish to know more about the survey before taking it, here is a brief description of the types of questions you will encounter. A large part of the survey consists of demographic questions (for example, about your job, your political orientation, and things like gender/ethnicity). I'd like to know as much information about you as you are willing to provide, because I want this survey to provide an accurate snapshot of the types of people involved in the men's rights community. The r…

Fair enough. I'll write up a comment with a brief introduction to the types of questions asked. As for informed consent, the first page of the survey is a lengthy consent form.

Thanks for posting this. We need more of this kind of thing! For anyone wondering about good ways to form a comment for this kind of thing, I have a few suggestions. Keep it short and sweet, state your support generally for the reforms (if that's true for you), and reference specific proposals you appreciate/find important. I realize that not everyone will have the time to read this thing in depth because it is so long, so I'll list the proposals I referenced (with explanations of what each one …

I'm on the same page with regard to getting more done outside the sub, but I disagree with you in terms of the scope. I don't think it would really be worth the time and/or effort to try to change reddit or to get our ideas accepted (or at least represented) in other subs. We need to get off the internet and campaign more in physical space. There is a lot of potential for what we could achieve if we can get a strong presence lobbying individuals, communities, and governments to attend to the nee…

It's a subjective thing, I reckon. I just found some of the idiosyncrasies with regard to reference style, quotes, and transitions made it somewhat harder to read. Doesn't change the value of the article as a mine of sources, but in my opinion it might make it less digestible for the uninitiated.

I agree. It's a positive thing both that there was widespread support for creating the Section in the first place, but also that there are people like these two professors (who authored the blogpost) involved. Their comment on 'toxic masculinity' is refreshing, coming from psychologists. Especially in light of the recent treatment guidelines released by the APA that seem to do all they can to reinforce the stigmatization of masculinity.

That is surreal. I have had similar moments with folks, albeit none with whom I share a patient-clinician relationship. I know a few people who fully acknowledge the issues the MRM is about, yet still consider themselves ardent feminists. Part of me wonders whether it's a defense mechanism, at this point. Call yourself an 'ally' to the movement, lest ye be burnt at the stake.

Speaking from personal experience, you do have to be really careful when trying to find a psychologist. But there are those out there who do actually care and will help us despite the prevailing social narrative.

Psychology =/= social psychology. There are some much more rigorous subdisciplines of psychology not prone to the same sorts of errors common in social. Clinical psych is one of them that has given society a lot of valuable knowledge (for example, CBT interventions), so it's real sad to see the APA drag the discipline into this ridiculous identitarian nonsense.
