4	Being a nice guy has not worked for the last 5 years or so I've tried it: Does being a douche actually work? Confidence and self esteem are two very different things. Self esteem is belief in yourself -- it's "deeper" than confidence which is more of an outward phenomenon. A pro runner can have lots of confidence that he'll win a marathon, but he might not have the self-esteem of someone who lacks any confidence in his ability to win.
