My (53m) wife (49f) started perimenopause at the start of the summer. She left me in mid-september. We went from happy to not talking to split up in 3 awful months. I was a good husband but she didn't want to "have to hide her emotions any longer". If you look through my post history, you can see the support this community gave me. It took a few weeks, but I'm in a really good place now. I've got a chick I'm banging who's more than happy to pick up what my ex put down. And, another date on Tuesd…

I would talk to a therapist, if you can afford it. You are worried about physical violence. They can advise you on how to handle it.

I don't think she's a narcissist. The way I think about it is that she just really needed someone to talk to, but didn't want to talk to me. When I would force her to talk to me, things generally got better. But I'm not a psychologist, and sometimes I would get it wrong. I would get overwhelmed, or try to solution things, or sometimes just ignore it out of my own stress. I think that led to her losing trust in me. It became quantitatively different after she started taking progesterone. Like, th…

Honestly, I'm at the point where I don't trust myself to communicate with her. I'm hurt, sad, lonely, depressed. This is a really good time to shut up and restrict my communication to my therapist, friends, and ranting to randos on reddit. Sorry to classify you as a rando :)

Alright, I concede. I'm not a doctor, just trying to make sense of how it all fell apart so quickly.

From my reading, menopause reduces two hormones, estrogen and oxytocin. Progesterone addresses the lack of estrogen, but not oxytocin. Oxytocin is the hormone that allows us to feel love and reduce stress. Estrogen is about the physical symptoms, heat flashes, etc https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38670161/ https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/oxytocin-the-love-hormone

Huh. I'm on good terms with her mom. I'll reach out in the morning.

I know, right? But, what do I do? I can't force her to see a doctor. I talked to her about it a few weeks ago. No luck. Not much else I can do, right?

Omg, I had the same thought! She's on progesterone, which can actually exacerbate depression. I talked to her about it a few weeks ago and she shot it down. I still think it's a major component, but what do I do? I can't force her to talk to her doctor.

No, they're in college. Wouldn't be living with us, even if we were still together.

Thank you! Consultation with a good lawyer is Monday. I got on it pretty quick! I'm sorry you had to go through this.

Kids are all out of the house. Maybe on holidays my son will come home, but my daughter is in a rigorous program in Scotland. I wouldn't see her for a year, anyway. One less thing to worry about.

She says she's not dating and doesn't ever want to. "I don't want to have to live with someone else's expectations". Honestly, I believe her. I have a consultation with the lawyer on Monday. And a therapist. Thank you, I really need to hear it'll be okay. I know it will be. I'm young enough to date, fairly good looking, well employed. I'll be back soon!
