It's true that he should have left, but humans aren't rational creatures, and for whatever reason he must not have thought that was an option. If he's telling the truth about why he murdered her, then I would say he's probably not a danger to society, as it takes extreme and repeated provocation to cause him to attack a human being. What the man needs is some serious therapy. Of course, he could be a lying murderer.
