My gut reaction is similar to the top comment there, which is to still feel like "toxic" masculinity is describing a subset of masculinity and not defining all masculinity, but clearly a lot of people feel there's a broader association, and if that's how the term is interpreted, then I'll stop using it. Though to quote this NIH study: "The majority (67%–80%) of intimate partner homicides involve physical abuse of the female by the male before the murder, no matter which partner is killed." My point still stands that I think you're missing important context, and I wish you'd be less quick to assume that I'm automatically misrepresenting the situation. It feels like you're projecting what I'm accusing my coworker of doing back onto me, without knowing anything about me, my former coworker or my former employer. I never called anyone a "misogynist", I just gave a counter example to your comment that "men show certain traits it's toxic masculinity, but when women show the same traits it's empowering" where me being assertive resulted in my unfair reprimanding. Yea, it's interesting, in the same way, I don't know any feminists that are anything like what is described in this sub 😅 though I suspect it has to do with the lens through which we experience. My thoughts: let's normalize men talking about their feelings, prioritizing and seeking mental health care, and talking about and recognizing their own abuse (both victims and perps). My coworker blocked me from finalizing my work, which is not normal in my field. I've never seen it happen to anyone else but me. I defended my work, and gave a detailed explanation of why it was the right solution, and he blocked it for stylistic reasons. As a woman in a male dominated field, I've experienced the opposite of what you're describing, where even positively associated masculine traits like assertiveness are viewed as "being difficult" (I've literally been told that on a performance review at a past job when a male coworker was essentially trying to veto my work and I was pushing back).	/r/MensRights	10/05/23 02:31 PM

I had no intention of minimizing DV against men, and I'm sorry if that's how it sounded. I recognize that there's nuance and specific circumstances that affect women and men differently, and it's important to hear different viewpoints for this reason. Injuries and deaths are a part of the real world impact of DV, so I do think it has a place in the conversation. That's fair, though when you dig into the details, the majority of DV injuries and deaths are sustained by women, and the majority of intimate partner violence by women is retaliatory/in self defense against violence being inflicted on them (I can dig up sources if you'd like, I've read books on it as a survivor of domestic violence myself). "Toxic expectations towards masculinity" sounds accurate. I personally don't mean to blame men or make them internalize it, moreso to put a name on the things like the increased stigma that men experience when seeking mental healthcare or when trying to get emotional support, and the resulting poor mental health that a lot of men experience. Hello, feminist here that would like to understand this viewpoint more. From my perspective and how I've used the term, toxic masculinity is basically as you called it the "symptoms of a lot of systemic issues that men and boys face".
