Here he is complaining about the Sophists (who focused entirely on rhetoric and not true wisdom), one of his major grievances of Roman “philosophers” of the time. Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius’ adopted grandfather and former emperor, was one of the ones that popularized Sophism in the Roman courts, something that Marcus Aurelius left him out of his list of people he admired for. Scary how well that applies in modern America and American politics.

I’d argue that’s it’s actually just the draw of something that explains the absurd (referring to Camus) to them. There’s two ways to face it: to confront it, or to deny it (Camus refers to religion here, but in this case, astrology applies).
