NPH is actually a pretty big magic nerd, so he might be able to pull out of that tailspin.

Make the date suggestion for a place that has no bill or is very low cost. Boardwalk, shopping for your clothes or a birthday present for your niece/sister, a rock poster or art gallery exhibition. If she suggests dinner for this or a second date, get excited that she's taking you out and how she must be different since that doesn't happen to often. There's no need to look cheap if you can suggest alternative dates that are interesting to both of you. In fact, it's usually better since it establ…

It doesn't make any sense, but since "be yourself" is such a feel-good thing to believe, people have faith in it. I think the "be yourself" platitude is less effective than "own yourself." By embracing the interests and activities that make you a unique person, by fully owning them and not apologizing for them, it affords each person the opportunity to stand apart from the crowd.

Don't. Don't try to force something that you're not comfortable presenting. Do. Go take some local improv courses. A lot of cities have groups that offer free or cheap intro classes on improv and comedy and will help you be better in the moment and find the funny patterns in everyday things. You'll get good critiques from other students and have a good chance of meeting someone fun as well.

Volunteer for some organization in your area. One year, I helped put together a haunted house charity fundraiser and met some of the best people and am friends with most, 10 years later. Worst case scenario if you don't meet friends is you made the world a little bit better.

You can take something away from these experiences, though. Turn "This is the only girl for me" into "I want to find a girl with these characteristics AND who is emotionally and physically available." There is no such thing as "the one." (And if there were, what a horrible turn of fate it is that most people never find them.) There are, however, girls who have the characteristics and personality traits that you love, and who love the same things about you. By focusing on one individual who is no…

Should you have access to a time machine, or face this situation again, the solution is simple: Her: I'm still in love with my ex-boyfriend. You: Ok. Call me if that doesn't work out. Good luck. (Grabs hat, heads toward door chatting up girl at another table on way out.) The alternative is you become the friend she spills her own messed up one-itis problems all over. Think about it this way: would you be interested in a girl who listened to YOU whine and bitch about your ex in the slim hope that…
