If you initiate on the floor, you're likely distracting them from concentrating on why they're there. If they leave to go get a drink or have a smoke, then they're going to be much more easy to open. Not surprisingly, that scene drew a lot of criticism from (mostly female) reviewers, saying "that would never work" and talking about how offensive it is. Which is hilarious given that the show "Girls" is (surprise) written by a girl.
