When lifting weights did the opposite of building confidence. I had, still have, a hard-won pride in my ectomorph build and soft stomach. I'm not myself without it. Losing that was self-betrayal. All the time I wasted working out would've been better spent reading books, making movies, creating handicrafts. It meant giving in to the pressure to be someone I'm not for the sake of impressing people who never liked me before, and believing that cheap sex was the best I could get from women I never wanted. In other words it was bending over and kissing the ass of everyone who ever elbowed me into a locker.
