If they are calling you a shitbag, they are insulting you, and distorting your view of women's rights organizations (there are many that aren't crazy). They are as much of a threat to [a potentially ideal form of] feminism as actual misogynists.

Name calling is counter-productive to whatever peaceful movement an individual supports.

Posting gawker here is cheating IMO. It would be like posting The Amazing Atheist on /r/feminism.

I want to discuss an issue, not start WWIII, so I will refrain from challenging /r/feminism.

the higher suicide rate amongst males is an indication they are in need of a society that is better structured to accommodate their needs and behaviors This is a really good way of phrasing the problem. I have seen people in this sub and in the world who would point to the 3:1 ratio and draw the conclusion that "men are more depressed" or "society favors women," and these skewed conclusions are why I don't like seeing these statistics used in arguments by radical feminists or MRAs to determine w…

... suicide attempts are still higher in women This point was meant to clarify the fact that these studies can give different results, that more militant gender-rights groups (including those who would create women's only suicide prevention programs) may (and have) used to further their own agendas. I am against either group using studies like these in their points because so much error-ridden conclusions have been drawn.

I am arguing that the issue is too complex to have all factors accounted for. Other factors include the fact that women having multiple attempts where as a man may die on his first try may skew statistics for how many attempts. I would also like to point out that those who would be willing to self harm or end their lives for the sake of attention are in need of serious help too, and should not be excluded from being considered victims of mental illness.

I would say that the underlying problem is mental illness, not the amount of deaths. For that reason I believe that gender-neutral help centers are the way to go, because by catering to only one group (even if they are more at-risk), you exclude another group, and this only leads to more conflict.

Women know that they are cared about, men know that they are not cared about. Men seek finality with suicide, women seek a way out. I think this is a massive oversimplification

Frankly it wouldn't make any difference to me whether it was men or women dying more, the underlying problems are the same.

If it is an argument, then an argument for what? There must be some systematic reason for the difference, and maybe the argument you are assuming is that men have it harder in some way compared to women and that could be corrected by doing something to ease the pressures on men. This implies the unstated consequence that the pressures on women would be treated with less attention, comparatively. Thanks, I should have clarified, I do see that statistic used in that way quite a lot, to imply that …

Fair enough, that would make for an interesting statistic, but there would still be many factors at play.

I am a guy who has attempted suicide multiple times in his youth, and I would not say that my (Canadian) society has not shown me sympathy. I am lucky to have hotlines, hospitals, care/therapy centers, and countless other resources at my disposal, and I have never had to endure any sort of bias against me, and I am sorry that is not the case where you live. Faults (such as cries for attention, and a general inability to measure emotional distress) in those statistics only serve as more reason di…

You are right, there are certainly more factors at play, I was just citing the one that was mentioned in the wiki page. Still, the amount of factors at play that cannot ever be measured or completely accounted for demonstrates to me that these statistics shouldn't be used in feminist or men's rights arguments.

I see now that I did misunderstand so thanks for clarifying. I do feel like phrasing [those we as a community should help] it as "people" rather than "men" would keep angry, emotionally distressed/self-victimizing feminists from lashing out, or feeling marginalized, so that less turmoil would be created, and people could more easily work with each other to find solutions to the problem at hand.

There is no way to account for attention seeking behavior among other things other things (multiple attempts, chemical imbalances vs problems can can be attributed to traumas in a person's life, some people not coming forward), so no statistic can accurately represent the emotional trauma felt by either side, and therefore they shouldn't be used as arguments for feminists or MRAs.

Maybe, can you elaborate?

If a man attempts and fails, society rushes to his help too. Just because women have more failed attempts, does not mean that society is favoring them. I believe in order to break down walls, mental illness should be viewed as a problem that all sufferers, their peers, and the world community must face together, rather than the 2 issues of depression in men, and depression in women, which only creates a greater rift between the 2 groups. The idea is to make this a big enough item on the radar to…

Either way, the situation is too complex for a statistic like the 3:1 ratio, or the number of attempts to be considered and arugment for either side.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
