To play devils advocate here, rape numbers are also down due to "Crime Downgrading," where police want their numbers to look good for ComStat. Police downgrade gang murders to non-criminal deaths and try to talk prostitutes out of filing things as rapes. It isn't a collective effort to not believe women, but to downgrade the crimes of the poor (and affects poor gang murder victims as well). There are people who are against war and the romanticism created by certain types of war memorials and I feel there is a lot of problematic stuff there. But when this student wants to vandalize it because it's "white men," that becomes deeply problematic. That's such a modern day, reactionary, bullshit reason. I remember reading about a UK story that was similar. A teacher had sex with a 17 year old, which was legal as far as age of consent goes, but illegal because the teacher was in a position of authority (specific laws about teachers).

It's crazy isn't it? Prostitution is legal, yet their Internet is invasively censored and monitored, and fictional porn depicting anyone underage is illegal (a man was convicted of Simpsons parody porn -- legal in the US). The US is way behind the rest of the world in...almost everything. Glad to know we can always look at the UK and be like, "Well at least we're not that guy."

You know what's interesting? When I was in Croatia, this group of girls were telling me how they hear about 16 year olds and teachers in the US/UK getting arrested ... and how in Croatia you see a lot of cases where teachers end up marrying high school students after they graduate. No one goes to jail and it's considered normal (sometimes .. depending on the city/region).

I'm not sure about NZ, but in Australia their sex offender list is a lot more sane and fair than America. For one, it's not public. It's confidential. You don't have a google map mashup of offenders around you. You can only check the registry if your an employer (and only certain jobs) or for letting flats/houses and some other things. But if they had gone through a doctor, in this situation, they would have advocated the child's rights. That's the fucked up party. ~$3,000, most of which probably gets split between the doctors, equipment, taxes, medical insurance (probably not; typically not covered) and the state is demanding money from him so they can get their cut of taxes too. I really wish I had never registered for this in high school. They try to scare you by saying if you don't register by 25, you can be fined and denied certain jobs the rest of your life. We shouldn't make it easier for them to draft either men or women to go kill brown kids who've done nothing to us in other countries.
