Yes, one is a nationally recognized "MSM" publication, and the other is a news compiling app I'd never heard of. I did not imply he should stay with her. I said he should have delivered the news to her when the kids were out of the house because abusive people are dangerously irrational, which /r/relationship_advice posters were not aware of.

It's an extreme example, but abusers are most dangerous when their victim wrests control back. It's something to bear in mind now that we know better, but a professional might have known already in advance. I'm not saying it was preventable, but there are lifetimes of consequences that we can examine our part in realizing. I'm like 20 comments deep in this thread when all I wanted to say was "I now give advice with the understanding that bad advice could result in the deaths of kids."

I looked it up, and "parental kidnapping" seems to require a court ordered custody agreement that one parent is in defiance of. It would not have been illegal for him to put the kids somewhere safe when he gave her divorce papers. Obviously that's all in hindsight, and we're getting off track the only point I wanted to make: we were not qualified to see how dangerous that situation was, so we gave one size fits all advice. I agree with that, it could have been inevitable. As a frequent commenter in /r/relationship_advice, I still use it as a learning experience that people's lives can be altered by the words we fire and forget. I was responding to the people who missed the point about what responsibility the subreddit should bear for that tragic outcome. It's no one's fault but the murderer's, but it might have been averted if we knew to escalate to a professional - that was my only point.

I realize what subreddit I'm in, but this is not relevant to whether divorces are systemically unjust or not, because this isn't a question about custody and child support. It is just about which parent had the kids that fateful day. A professional might have warned OP, whereas commenters in that thread did not know to. You do not go to jail as a parent unless you cross state lines. Look up "parental kidnapping laws" in your state.

You're conflating custody agreements and the kids being out of the house when daddy serves mommy divorce papers. No one would blink if the kids were at grandma's that day, and it might have saved their lives. The point is no one here could have known that, but a psychologist or counselor might have.

Are you in law enforcement, or are you a family lawyer? You seem pretty sure, so I have to ask. If the kids aren't missing, and the parent isn't fleeing across state lines, what is the crime? Cops won't even let you file a missing person report until 24 hours have elapsed, unless there is credible evidence the children will be taken across state lines. They're going to say "this is a civil matter".

It's not kidnapping unless you take them out of state, so your entire point is moot. Just take them across the street or to their grandma's. A professional would have known to take safer measures, and it was a reminder to those of us who give relationship advice that there are real life consequences of our words. Obviously, this was an extreme example, but so many other advice subreddits know when to escalate to a professional, the relationship subreddits ought to as well.

What's that old saying about prevention and cures? It shouldn't be some radical idea that money is most wisely spent preventatively, than after all these problems grow. If you can't even agree with that, then this is a waste of time. I mean really, do you see a leak and wait for the pipes to break? And then wait for mold to grow? I would agree with you if reality matched the numbers you just pulled out of your ass. Here is a good TED talk which mentions how much money we spend on death row inmates, and how little it would have cost to prevent. It should not be shocking that our healthcare system creates insane costs that are passed onto you anyway.
