1	[FR] Cold approach at night I usually go with the stereotypical American smile + handshake and "Nice to meet you." or "Hi, how are you doing?" At a minimum, all Japanese know at least those two phrases and should be able to respond in simple English. It never fails to get a laugh out of them. From there, I explain what city I grew up in and what ethnicity my parents are. That clears any confusion and makes them open up to me a bit more. 1	[FR] Cold approach at night Ah, well on first glance, Japanese people always think I'm either Japanese or mainland Chinese. Their image of an American is a tall white guy but since I don't look the part, it never crosses their mind that I could be anything else. Unless I directly let them know I was raised in America, they'd never be able to figure it out. Even after I tell them, they have a hard time believing it until I bust out fluent English.
