| 3 | I think it's pretty relevantI'm not a doctor, but from my limited experience with the topic a cleft palate can also affect the roof of the baby's mouth, not just the lip, affecting the baby's ability to suckle (from breast or bottle), possibly resulting in malnourishment. Wikipedia tells me also that even if only the lip is cleft, the palate sometimes needs to be operated on anyway because of the muscles involved.
