Nice paraphrase but not sure I get the joke. I assume your insulting his intelligence, but retention (keeping) doesnt imply any insult. Am I just a woosh or?

This. I'm in the process of figuring this out myself, but it feels dissonant with who I am and inauthentic.

Not everyone sees it this way, but wouldn’t doing something despite being afraid of the consequences improve your self-respect? Talking to strangers is hard, but doing it shows you can push past that. Or if it goes wrong, realizing you survived and getting over it shows you’re resilient and strong. To me, those things make me feel greater respect for myself.

You don’t like feeling challenged, like the other person has something to teach or show you? Some of my best friendships are ones where people give me shit all the time, cuz it helps me reflect and improve on myself.

Disagreeing is not the same as criticizing. You can show interest, but still disagree and tease her a little about what she’s into. A friend of mine once told me that she likes it when guys give her a hard time, so long as it’s casual and fun. It’s good to be given shit and to feel challenged, but it’s off putting if the person is like “You like that shit?”

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
