There is something similar in Czech Republic. Mother will get paid leave up to 6 months. Than there is unpaid leave for 3 YEARS !! and employer must give her position back after she returns. Needles to say that it is strongly criticized mainly by local feminists.

I would recommend holiday outside of US or UK. In here people even slap their children on public (not that I approve it). You need some place to relief your anxiety. Also carry some identification for your children with you. Copy of birth certificate, photo which shows you and your family together etc... I would also see psychiatrist. But in some ways your fear is justifiable, I personally avoid UK with my children.
