I would add one more tip for complete beginners, and that would be to have a wingman with you. Somebody who will, most importantly, hold you accountable to actually doing it as opposed to losing your nerve at the last second. It's also an easy way out of the conversation if things start to go downhill and you need to eject. "Hey, nice talking to you but I have to get back to my friend."
