Indeed. I'd interpret that as meaning that he should hit them until they stop moving and are incapacitated. I.e. self-defense = hit them with a pipe till they are unconscious/dead

Well no, everyone is innocent until proven guilty – even if they're making an accusation. Without proof, "I don't know" is the correct response, both regarding whether he committed rape and whether she made false allegations.

I don't know if she's telling the truth or lying. But 'innocent until proven guilty' applies to her too, so I'm not going to believe she's lying until there's some better evidence for it.

My point was that it doesn't make sense to dismiss someone's beliefs or arguments just based on who they are. This goes for feminists, as well non-feminists. Obviously, it's fine to make other criticisms, but I don't think that this was a very good one.

Trump criticised feminism. This from a man worth millions while teenage girls and women are kidnapped and forced into prostitution..../s Or maybe we could just be able to express our opinions without them being dismissed based on 'identity politics'?

That's all speculation on your part. She claims she made that statement due to coercion from him – something that is entirely plausible, and indeed common in victims of abuse in this position. Both scenarios are consistent – her telling the truth before and lying now to escape the contract vs. her lying before and telling the truth now because she found the courage to come forward. The problem is, as I said, a lack of evidence. I know it's more satisfying to 'pick a side' – that's why so many fe…

Actually, her personal wealth is more like $500,000, whereas that of Dr Luke is about $100 million – not that it matters. When it comes to upholding the contract, the problem is lack of evidence for the claim that she was raped. If she was raped, it would be perfectly reasonable to have the contract annulled, just like anyone else in that position, regardless of wealth.

According to her, the line of reasoning is that he subsequently raped her. If it's true, it's a reasonable enough line of reasoning.

Come on, you can't call me intellectually dishonest and then lie about all the stuff I said. • "vitriol and hatred" is an accurate description of the attitudes towards her by many people on this subreddit. • I didn't say there was enough evidence to find him guilty. Whether there's a preponderance of evidence is debatable, and not something I can answer without having access to information about the case that I don't have, and that I assume you don't either. • Sony offered to modify the contract…

So let's be clear... if a rape victim perjures themselves because their rapist and boss who they have a 10 year contract with threatened to destroy their life... that person deserves vitriol and hatred? As for the 'throwing doubt' – it does throw a little doubt on the case, but it doesn't prove her claims unfounded. So we have a musical artist that wants out of a exclusive contract she willingly submitted to, even after Sony made reasonable accommodations and said she didn't have to work with Lu…

I agree that she did indeed lie. Even her lawyers have admitted it. I suppose it's the focus and the tone that are the problem. So, in the case of Santoro, this guy 'comes out' with this painful story of abuse after having denied it in the past. If the response of the internet is "Hey, that makes you a liar!, I think that's inappropriate. Likewise, I think it's inappropriate to completely dismiss Ke$ha as a "liar" because of this statement she made while allegedly under pressure from her abuser.…

He was sufficiently psychologically broken by his abuser that he stood up in court and denied it happened... and that makes him a lying bitch? Maybe you should rethink your position a bit here. It seems pretty cold.

I definitely agree some people here are too quick to assume an accusation is false, probably because of all the proven false accusations we've been hearing about lately that result in little to no punishment for the false accuser. When someone is proven to have made false accusations, I completely agree that they should be severely punished. However, I would point out that it's not as common as a perusal of the front page of /r/mensrights would perhaps lead one to believe. However, it is importa…

For me the distinction is the same one I make regarding "listen and believe". If a friend came to me and told me they were abused, I would not question it. If the same friend took their abuser to court, I would absolutely expect them to be questioned. It's not a matter of whether or not an alleged victim should be questioned or believed, it is a question of when where and how. That's the thing – I'm not asking you or anyone to "believe". I'm just asking you to refrain from believing she's lying …

Perhaps she doesn't have any male friends who have been falsely accused of crimes? Also, if you want to play that game, there are more women who have been raped than men who have been falsely accused. Best just #GiveYourMoneyToWomen... /s

I agree that when there is no proof, a person shouldn't be convicted of a crime. Absolutely. When it comes to contract law, I think a lower standard of evidence is required, though it's not my area. Scrutinise all you want! But there is no proof that she lied, or even strong evidence. And without that proof, it's not ok to treat her as if she's guilty. I think the difference is trying to use accusations for personal gain or revenge. As far as I know, Matthew Santoro didn't have any reasons to ma…

If I were as rich as she is, I wouldn't mind giving money for legal fees to a friend who told me she or he had been the victim of a serious crime.
/r/MensRights26/02/16 12:31 PM

I never said I believed her. However, in a case where proof is impossible, support can still be justified. If we didn't support people who couldn't prove their accusations, the majority of victims of crime wouldn't get any support.

The crime in question would be slander? Ok. So you need to prove she's guilty of that, which will require you to prove she wasn't raped.

I didn't say anything about supporting her allegations, and nor did the title. We're talking about supporting her as a person, and more specifically in her attempt to annul her contract with her alleged rapist. The most harm that can be done is the monetary loss that he might incur – and frankly, that's not my chief concern. It doesn't "look like a false accusation". The facts of the case a perfectly consistent with it being either true or false. Statistically, it's more likely that it's true th…

It's open-shut in the sense that there's insufficient evidence to convict him for rape, yes, probably. And he absolutely shouldn't be convicted unless there's more evidence. However, that doesn't prove that she wasn't raped. In fact, it's more likely than not that she was. So as long as you're not harming him in any way, why not support her? Do we only support people who can prove that they were the victim of a crime? Sorry, but if you were unable to film yourself being raped or have witnesses p…

"X% of students filled rape allegations" "DOJ claims that 80% are unreported" Is there not a difference between "reporting" and "filling allegations"? In particular, as I understand it, the prosector is responsible for the decision of whether criminal charges can be pressed. So, it seems like you're leaving out many cases where rapes were reported but where no charges were pressed.

Because the male equivalent, /r/oney is much smaller, with only 25,000 subscribes. It was also much smaller before they made /r/twoxchromosomes a default. Reddit is a business. The defaults are what draws new customers in, and are tailored to be as appealing to as wide audience as possible. If there's little demand for a 'male issues' sub, then they're not going to make it a default.

Are you French by any chance? "reasumable" isn't a word. You'd probably say "the beliefs of the bible can be summed up in a short list". I'm not American, so I don't use "progressive" or "liberal" like they do, but I'm probably on that end of the political spectrum. I have a relatively simple set of beliefs, which are pretty stable. I'm happy to talk if you have any specific questions.

Catholics? But Catholics acknowledge, and they're really the only group on earth that does so, that nobody (well, only one) is perfect. Lots of people who have nothing to do with Catholicism will say "nobody is perfect". Most people, in fact. Also the beliefs of Catholics are pretty few and the same since 2015 years. They're not pretty few. In fact, they have an entire book of beliefs... (I'm being a little facetious. I know that their beliefs are partly based on the bible and partly on other th…

I think it's a little unfair to insist on generalising feminists so thoroughly, while refusing to generalise Catholics. Plenty of Catholics will insist that "you have to adhere to the following beliefs or you're not really a Christian", just as plenty of feminists won't have an entire shopping list of things you have to believe to be a feminist. They're both 'broad churches'.

"troll" is of course a term that gets abused a lot. I mean "a person who says extreme or exaggerated things that they might not necessarily believe in order to offend". Now, I don't really know if he believes everything he says here. He might. But I do think that he goes out of his way to present his attitude, that he knows from the start will offend some people, in the most offensive way possible. So yeah, "troll" is at least partly applicable. He's trying to be asshole.

stopping the imprisonment of womenpeople who pose no risk to the public They would be better served by women’s centres with access to help for mental health, addictions, housing and employment, which could break the cycle of deprivation, addiction and crime, and keep families together. It costs more than £44,000 to imprison a womanperson for a year; a community order costs around £2,800. “They are much less likely to reoffend if they are given the opportunities to engage in community orders and …

Quoting him from a BBC article: Mr Corbyn said: "My intention would be to make public transport safer for everyone from the train platform to the bus stop to the mode of transport itself. "However, I would consult with women and open it up to hear their views on whether women-only carriages would be welcome - and also if piloting this at times and [on] modes of transport where harassment is reported most frequently would be of interest." I doubt it will be in cases where there was no real intent to rape Not what I said. Although I imagine that plenty of rapists are able to rationalise away their crime – "she wanted it really", "she was just playing hard to get", "women like an assertive man". "no real intent to rape" is a very deceptive phrase. That said, I do agree that there are plenty of things that get called rape in certain spheres that shouldn't be. That is why is it is important not to make the victim believe something th…

It makes things a little greyer Mate, no. "saying no" is not grey. Anyone is entitled to say no for whatever reason they feel like. the best option is to back off immediately if she says "no". It shows you respect her. Not having sex with someone who has said no is not "the best option". It's a very serious legal and moral requirement. I know you probably didn't mean it like that, but it's just a very unfortunate way of phrasing it.

She chose to have sex even though she didn't want to, because she loved him. That's not what I said. I said "he made me". I'm assuming either physical force or the refusal to stop when asked. it ought to be for real harm, and not something that depends entirely on what is going on in someone's head at the time I'm very uncomfortable with the term "real harm". The psychological damage of rape can be horrific and debilitating. because there's just no way to know, without video-recording every sexu…

I agree that there are incentives for someone to lie. But that's not reason enough to assume that someone is lying. In this example, unless there's more evidence and if the husband denies it, clearly there wouldn't be enough evidence for a conviction, and that's the way it should be. But that doesn't mean she's lying. One of the things I find a little disturbing (and I don't aim this at you specifically) at the extreme ends MRM and feminism, is the unwillingness to admit that we don't know somet…

Feelings don't affect whether or not you were raped. You can feel violated when there was no rape, and you can equally have no or few feelings of violation when you were raped. Of course it's wrong to persuade someone they were raped when they weren't. But think about an example like: My husband and I were having an argument, and he got angry and made me have sex with him. But he's my husband and I love him so I know it's not rape. It's absolutely appropriate to try and encourage someone who is …

Well, whether abortion is murder or not depends on whether you think a foetus is a person or not. If a person doesn't believe in God or some kind of religion which implies "an immortal soul" from conception, it's pretty hard to find any real justification for the idea that something that which, for example weighs a gram at 8 weeks, is a person. It has none of the characteristics that we would normally consider to make up personhood. No thoughts, no complex brain, no language, no ability to respo…
