Rape is one crime, there are many sexual crimes. Sexual Battery doesn't not involve penetration, but does include forced sexual contact. Molestation is also a crime that doesn't involve penetration. If you want to pursue charges, speak to the police.

She is still figuring out how exactly she fits in, lesbian, bi, or trans.

It cost my friend over $40k and two years of his life, not counting child support, to win custody of his teenage daughter from his abusive ex. That poor girl was beaten daily for being lgbt and treated like trash and her father was paying for it. Thank goodness he had a good job, a new wife with a great job, and a very supportive family, otherwise he never would have had enough money to finance his court battle while his child support payments paid for her lawyer. The system is totally broken.

Then they'd just submit a receipt for rent or mortgage and say they need the money to provide a home for the child.

No, you balance the field by taking the identity out of the equation. Don't tell anyone you are trans, don't tell them your gender at all, don't include a picture, don't state your race. Just submit your article in a blind review and let merit be the basis of selection. No one can discriminate if they don't know anything about the author.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
