there is no right or wrong side of the footpath. if you want to spout rules the etiquette is that as a common courtesy if you notice someone coming the other way is on the same side of the path then you move out of the way. Regardless of gender i will accommodate the other person which occasionally leads to a stalemate when both parties move to avoid each other to the same side.

it actually kind of is. One of the reasons that the Party voted Julia out of party leader was that poll results showed that there was a huge swing away from the ALP and towards the Liberal/National coalition. The ALP were looking at a landslide defeat. One of the reasons that Julia had become unpopular with voters was in part because of a speech she made to a group called 'Women for Gillard' where she asked the attendees (all female) to "imagine a world where a 'MAN in a BLUE tie' goes overseas …
