He’s my ex?

I made 4xs as much as my former partner, and you know what? He never complained about it, paid his fare share, but I always - and I mean always- helped him out when he needed it. And he knew it was okay to ask. That's what a true partner does.

If I mention I’m saving up for anything for my apartment for example, he’ll buy it for me. I can't tell my Dad things like this anymore because I feel so guilty when he DOES buy stuff.

I try not to tell my Dad big problems because he stays up all night worrying about me. He never told me that, my Mom did. It has made me have exceptionally high expectations for partners and unfortunately, one of the reasons I've fallen for a narc or two. They know how to play the part in the beginning.

Not thrilled to admit I went through something similar. At the time, I tried to get over it and move on, but to this day, could never forgive him for it. Through that experience and many other experiences like it, I've realized that behavior like this is always, ALWAYS, an indicator of even worse behavior you don't know about. A surfaced betrayal that hints at underlying thoughts and feelings you may never know about.

I had a friend who got visibly upset that I had changed my number and not told him. That should have been the sign. Things escalated. I didn't end up blocking him, but I did ignore him. The amount of ego that oozed from those messages was wild. He really did not understand and would not accept that I wanted space and distance from him.

In the past, whenever I've had urges to pursue an ex or old fling (for closure, for an ego boost, whatever), I've reminded myself of all the times I did that before, and how bad I felt about myself while I doing it. Do you really want to drive a few hours, anxious and nervous, to meet up with someone who will probably just make you feel like shit? Do you really want to send that text and wait a week or two to get a response, if any? This approach has helped me a lot in the past because no, I've …

When I was single, I approached men constantly. Almost every relationship or fling started with me telling them I found them attractive or asking them if they'd want to go on a date. Now that I think about it, I can't think of a time I didn't initiate it.

I tend to project my feelings of misdirection on whomever I'm dating, so I totally understand. But I blame society -- from a young age, all I heard from TV shows, books, etc., was that the struggle for a perfect, storybook romance should be the center of everything. In reality, there is so much more to life.

In the past few years, I've phased out more than one friend because I constantly felt the relationship was unbalanced. But having these types of friends helped me understand where/how I wasn't showing up as a friend, too.

Sure! Here's a link to the article. It's called, "Where is Romeo?" I've been thinking about what I posted here a lot over the past few days. I'm not making excuses for LVM, but looking back at my experiences, it's so obvious that in many cases, I was the one standing in the way. There were a lot of nice guys who wanted to date me, but I was so focused on that toxic love (hey when it's good, it's great), I could not give them the time of day. I've also been mentally revisiting all the times I for…

She obviously knows how to love someone in a healthy way. From what she said, it does not seem like he knows how to. I don’t know if this is about how into her he was — because a woman could be his literal dream and it won’t fix his relationship issues. When you have addiction issues and lack empathy for others, no amount of romantic love for another person will change who you are is as a person, unless you invest time in resolving your personal issues .... without dragging a partner down to you…

Heather Havrilesky (Ask Polly) just wrote about this - the key to breaking your fixation on a toxic person is to find something bigger than that person, bigger than your feelings to pursue.

These are the moments that I am so thankful for my snarky, very expectant mother. She never fails to point out when people (in general, not only men) aren't putting in their fair share.

My ex wasn't a gamer, but he played anywhere from 7-8 hours on weekends. He wouldn't wake up until 3-4 PM. I tried to "communicate" my way out of it, I tried to make plans outside the house, I made interesting dinners, I tried EVERYTHING, and nothing got him away from the screen. I ended up meeting someone else and we split up. He was so angry at me for leaving, and said he was the "last to know" that I was unhappy. You will try, and try, and try in situations like this until you just have nothi…
