I get what you're saying and I'd say he probably didn't need to do that. But the point is, he's the one that is getting assaulted and yet double standards somehow make it wrong when he strikes back. If this were 2 dudes or the genders were reversed, everyone would be applauding them unquestionably. I wouldn't have hit her like that myself, but I'm not going to feel bad for a woman that's straight up beating someone and then gets hit back.

So it's his responsibility to stop her? Isn't it plausible that he was being patient, thought it was over, then assumed another attack was coming and defended himself? Or are we just going to decide that it's completely different rules as far as assault goes for men and women?
