Hmm...then let me rephrase the question. As a guy who works, what would you expect of your girlfriend in this situation? Keep in mind starting a family early will also take up some of your time, and possibly hurt your career.

We both got through undergrad with financial aid/scholarships, and we both have enough grants to put us through grad school. Your point still stands, though--I could be getting a job instead of going to grad school, so that's an opportunity cost.

Those were roughly my thoughts too; I guess I posted here because none of those options seem to come without a big sacrifice (except for option 3, which might not be achievable.) Somewhere in my mind I knew there wasn't a "perfect" answer anyhow. Thanks for your input, it helped me outline my thoughts.

It probably would be easier if I were with a financially stable guy...we would have the funds to raise a family, I could establish my career, and I can contribute to the family when I'm also making good money. The thing is, both our ideal career paths will probably take a while...and I know if I have a child "early", since we both want to be attentive parents...it's going to hugely distract from our careers.

That requires a PhD, postdoc, and assistant professorship. Where can I fit having a family into all of that? I'm passionate about my field of study (physical chemistry) and want any children I have to grow up in a double income home. That's how I was raised, and I…

That's the thing; my mother (who had me late for biological reasons) encourages me to have a child before I'm 30, and so do most older women. I'm more old fashioned so I do want to have my first child before 30, but the thing is my boyfriend doesn't want to interrupt his education and neither do I. And I plan my children to grow up in a double-income home. I'm worrying it's a case of "wanting it all" but what I want is related...I want the financial stability of people who choose to have childre…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
