They don't actually. The suicide attempt rate drops from over 40% to almost the same as the general population

It is not experimental, it has been used for many decades for other puberty related issues, with no problems. And, yes, I browse reddit, it's true.

Over 40% of Transgender people will attempt suicide at least once in their life. This will be significantly reduced for that 20-25% who have not had to endure the distress of going through an unwanted puberty or developing traits which are not reversed by HRT. Meanwhile, the 75-80% who decided it wasn't for them will go through puberty and experience no related issues.

Delaying puberty is completely reversible, and, for the cases where they persist with the transition, avoiding an unwanted puberty makes an incredible difference in giving the child the best chance at a happy life. What is wrong with this idea?

Why should a child not be allowed to be happy with who they are?

Gender Identity is determined by the brain, species is not.

I'm MtF, and that statement strikes me as a bit strange. It doesn't matter the direction, all Trans people will probably go through a lot of shit

http://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/AFSP-Williams-Suicide-Report-Final.pdf That has some info which might help, mainly this part: Suicide attempt rates by Sex Assigned at Birth Male 60% Female 40% Anyway, I'm a Trans woman myself, AMA

I'm simply not convinced that tackling the problem from the angle "person born in the wrong body" - the all too common moralistic trope that is a sort of sacred cow in "educated" circles - is the best way. There's no other angle. Studies are increasingly pointing towards Gender Identity (completely separate from Gender Expression or Roles) being determined by the brain, as Transgender people have various brain structures which appear much more like those of their identified gender as opposed to …

Gender Dysphoria is a Mental Disorder, and the only successful treatment, which is incredibly successful, is transition. There's nothing else which relieves the dysphoria. Results of hormones are varied to the extreme, and it all relys on a ridiculous number of factors, but generally, the majority of Transgender people will "pass" after several years of HRT. Add to that Facial Feminisation Surgery (for MtF) if needed, and the percentage would be fairly high I would expect. The insanely high suic…

Well you've convinced me she's no good as a model. Original point, though, which may not even apply to you, was that there are some beautiful trans women out there

Oh wow, you're a genius! You need to spread this revelation! The people must know, being a woman is actually easier!

Just assuming they're a trans woman, what about someone like Andreja Pejic (you will probably need to Google)?

If you look at the transgender people who are really quite successful in every sense: career, socially, romantically etc and are otherwise completely fine and unexciting, surely they can't all be "mentally ill"? Unless it's some level of "mentally ill" that has no bearing in the real world?

Totally not a bad thing at all, seeing as genitals tend to play a big part in sex
/r/PurplePillDebate22/02/15 08:24 PM

But you're not using it to define normal genitals, you're defining gender with it. I don't mean to argue, I'm just trying to help you see things a different way. More and more research is coming out agreeing with the idea that gender identity is very much determined by specific structures in the brain. This lends itself to the widely believed theory that transgenderism is caused by complications during development in the womb, where the brain will form as one sex and the body as the other

As a trans woman myself I must say, despite the result, your handling of that situation, as well as your recount of it, is really quite awesome. If only many more people were like you.

I don't know as I have never done any research into them and I'm not willing to assume. If my understanding as I explained it is wrong, I'm happy to be shown how Transgenderism is a mental disorder in reference to what mental disorder actually means.
/r/PussyPassDenied14/02/15 11:03 PM

Maybe this is wrong, but my understanding of mental disorder would suggest something which is purely psychological in nature, and would be treated with therapy. Based on that, I maintain that Transgenderism is in no way a mental disorder.

But it is not at all a mental disorder according to modern medicine and science. And just what makes it "not right"? It is simply correcting a birth defect such that a person might be able to have some sort of quality of life.

What leads you to believe it's a mental issue when modern medicine and science disagree?

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
