Someone has already answered in the context of IVF but, in normal sexual procreation, sperm typically take 24 hours to swim to the egg site. The male sperm swim faster than the female sperm but die onsite if they arrive and there's no egg. Female sperm get to the site last and wait around for an egg until they expire 3-5 days later.
