The spouse excuse is a useful way to sell something shortly after buying it without disclosing "the item is shit and I hate it." OP and others in this thread are retards for reading so much into this. You are not being micro-aggressioned on.

Avoiding hellish lives and raising children that aren't morally bankrupt (as in, religion) was probably the main thing driving people--until the rise of hippies and consumerism.

I think so. Think of all the suffering and struggle our ancestors went through to get us here--plagues, mass starvation, ice ages-- it seems like hubris to decide it stops because we're a from a certain generation and want to spin plates or chase other hedonistic goals. There's useful wisdom in trp, but it comes with a whole lot of the ugliness; it's like the misguided inversion of modern feminism. Clearly not the answer either.
