I think you're taking a simplistic view of gender roles. Norms which ascribe a set of expectations to one gender necessarily impose opposing expectations on the other. Men are expected to be aggressive and self-reliant. Women who are aggressive and self-reliant are called bitches. In everyday society, this means that women are forced into passive, submissive roles, and men are expected to be forceful, strong, and domineering. Women are reliant on men for protection. Clearly, these norms hurt bot…
