I believe it’s the state’s responsibility to ensure a strong military able to defend a country and an effective diplomacy mitigating any external hostility, everything obviously funded through taxes in whatever form. No citizen should be forced to go risk their lives (in theory), it’s the state’s duty towards them. Ok, so following your logic Russia is exculpated from invading Ukraine and we shouldn’t help because the US has invaded Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam. Not to mention the West is a single, homogenous bloc with no diversity of interests throughout history, and of course equals the US. I’m not American, but yeah, agreed every power acts to protect or further their interests, and Americans have indeed done nasty things which they should regret. I think various sanctions breaking them economically would come first. What stops us from intervening to disarm North Korea then? Nobody has to do anything, it’s all efforts of diplomacy. I know and agreed, „nukes held on its territory” is better put since they lacked the full control, it was just left over after the Soviets.
