Why wouldn't elections matter? You can literally vote. If a chunk of the population wants to see something happen, regardless of the corruption and influence of the establishment, a candidate will appear with the wanted qualities. I'm not saying it's easy to make change, but it's much easier than it would be to change a monarchy or dictatorship. Don't take free speech for granted. Opportunities exist for the masses now that may not exist in the future.
