They are sharing some of the load but it's far from a fair share. Most of the physically demanding, risky or undignified forms of employment are still dominated by men. Whereas women are occupying mostly the managerial positions and the service sector.

Could be both but things were already on the downward trend for a while. The Golden age of the US as great as it was is often exaggerated in terms of longevity. By the 70s you already had signs of things to come. Women couldn't go back to their housewife life style even if they wanted after the wage stagnation took hold and it's a pipe dream for the majority of people these days.

The influx of women into the workforce after the 70s was probably an effect of the wage stagnation and deindustrialization leading to single income households no longer being viable. But this shouldn't take away from the fact that being a housewife is a privilege and women should be in the work force sharing the burden on equal basis with men and not push all of it onto men.

Again, things are not as simple. There's so many factors to consider such as living costs, employment, benefits, the state of technological development is also one that gets ignored. Men were forced into war and mortal danger on a regular basis while women's demand to have abortions despite having multiple options for contraception is considered as some grave threat to their existence.
