Well referring to anyone as "it" is probably going to make them unhappy. I know I wouldn't like being called "it". I think the vast majority of people are fine with being called they/them though

I don't know their pronouns, that's why I default to they/them, which is like using a neutral pronoun like "it", except not dehumanizing
