Now they have gone pretty weird (they are a circlejerk) and there is very serious talk of removing them from reddit somehow. I think this is a consequence of viewing themselves as something apart from reddit. By having a part of something that considers itself not part of something could lead you to do something against the site, or not feel so much compassion for fellow site members, incline you to troll more, or launch an external campaign that risks the future of reddit so that reddit conforms to your idea of it should be.
