| 3 | This girl gets it.I find this perfectly okay and in line with efficient pricing in a two-sided market. The price difference is not a function of illogical hate or prejudice, but simply the profit motive. I do not see anything wrong with that and I think this subreddit is misguided in its outrage over it. The authors of that study also concluded that racism was rampant. The economist Steven Levitt criticized that study for omitted variable bias - and used the signaling argument I gave above - and showed, in my opinion, that the conclusions are unfounded. Let us clear this up. You said that the study demonstrated the existence of racism. I said it didn't, but I didn't say that racism doesn't exist. Further, the study, assuming it is valid, would not only demonstrate the existence of racism but also the effects, and possibly the magnitude of the effect. If race is correlated to other characteristics which people think has bearing in this particular situation, then the race is a signal and is treated as such by the buyers.
