Yes, they weren't directly forced; however, they faced enormous social pressure and coercion, and if they refused, they would be ostracized/a disgrace to their families and would have to find the means to support themselves without a man, which would be extremely difficult in that period.

Yes but the evidence for why the wind is occurring is actually quite complex. Do you think the wind "just happens" no no no there is a myriad of scientific factors backing it.
