Right. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but extensive studies have shown that almost all of the "gender pay gap" is due not to some institutionalized misogyny, but for reasons like a larger proportion of women choosing "caregiver" professions that don't pay as well as STEM jobs, and wanting/needing maternity time off, and not wanting or being able to put in long hours because they prefer time with their families. All of which is fine, but when it comes down to it, only like 2 or 3 cents …

Oh they have a rebuttal, but it's an unprovable conspiracy theory along the lines of "it's the patriarchy purposely keeping women down". So they'd have you believe that in a cutthroat capitalist system that values profits above all else, those market forces are unable to overcome some primal sexism that is ingrained in all men. Or something like that. It's pretty silly...but there it is.

"But, but, women have smaller hands and can't work the wire cutters like men!" Yeah, that's kind of the point. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at your creator. In all seriousness, equal pay for unequal performance is quite literally sexist.

I’m only on the second ep, but so far it just seems less of a “feminist” thing and more along the lines of him trying to evolve into more of a legit businessman...a la Stringer Bell. But like I said, I’m only on episode 2.

Well, I mean, if women were performing equally to men for less money, wouldn't companies be falling over themselves to only hire women?

Funny, I was watching the first episode of the new season of Peaky Blinders earlier today. The women's union organizer is arguing with Tommy (the head of the gang and owner of various factories) that there's a 10p/week disparity in the pay between men and women at his factories, and that he had to make it right. So he says, fine, I'll give all the women a 5p/week raise, and all the men a 5p/week reduction, and I'll let 'em know that it was your idea. Shrewd.

The point is thus: let's say you have a bowl of m&ms and have no choice but to eat some (because in effect we have no choice but to investigate/prosecute rape). Just based on previous data, 8% of them are suspected to be poisoned. Would you rather: a) Ignore the fact that some are probably poisoned and just wolf down a handful, because nobody wants a non-poisoned M&M to go uneaten or b) take the candy to a lab and run extensive tests to determine which are poisoned and which are not, and then ea…

Well if you read any of these missives, it's not really anything specific that they call for, but more along the lines of basically "standing up to your buddies when they're even vaguely sexist" and "listening to women and being there for them" and "understanding that they don't trust you". Here's the silly one I saw first: Dear Men, If you've been on social media today, your feeds are heavy with women who have brought attention to the issue of sexual harassment by adding "Me too" as their statu…

Yeah, I have no inherent issue with the "me too" thing (as long as it doesn't exclude males), but there are a lot of "walls-of-text" missives being spread along with it that are basically blaming this shit on ALL men...because even if we don't personally assault or harass women, we're still "complicit" because we aren't doing more to stop it.

Do you think that there are more specific statutes that could be applied here? Or are you saying that there should be but aren't?

Hey at least she's being charged. As I noted in another comment above, a lot of times there aren't even any charges for false accusers. Jackie Coakley basically walked away from that whole Rolling Stone UVa debacle even though she clearly made up that whole elaborate scenario (and even went so far as to create fake personalities on the internet) just to get a guy.

she's almost certainly going to get away with it FTA: Yovino is now charged with one count of second degree false reporting and one felony count of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. The felony could land her in prison for up to five years.

Yovino is now charged with one count of second degree false reporting and one felony count of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. The felony could land her in prison for up to five years. Her arraignment is set for March 3. At least she's being charged...it's insane how women get away with these lies. Jackie Coakley, the girl who made up that story that was the basis for Rolling Stone's BS piece, hasn't had to face any repercussions. She'll just go on with her life...shit, most news…

Hm, I didn't know that there was an objective definition of blackout drunk...but you and I know that in either state, if the genders were reversed, it would be an open-and-shut case of rape and nobody would argue any differently...yet here Amy is, openly admitting this, and she's too dense to even see the obvious fucking hypocrisy.

It's not just that people don't care. I listened to an interview with her on NPR one morning. It was just awful. All of it, and I mean all of it, was about how she was a victim of this, a victim of that. She might as well have called this book "The Girl With the Victim Complex". Maybe that shit resonates with other people who have a victim complex, but it gets old after a few pages I would guess.

There's also the whole incident where she raped a guy (well, she had sex with him even though he was blackout drunk, which, if the roles were reversed, everyone would say that was rape no question), but then identifies as a feminist and rails against "rape culture", etc. That's where I first started to lose respect for her.

The former is actually worse than the latter, ethically. She's trying to blame her feelings on some kind of institutional bogeyman, rather than just owning up to her feelings.

but the trauma could have affected Jackie’s memory. To me, this is the most absurd part of the entire article. NOW has officially jumped the shark. Let's get this straight: Jackie Coakley invents a false rape story. Rolling Stone SJW eats it up, prints it; nation gasps; the lives of a great many people and organizations are negatively affected as they are assumed guilty until proven otherwise. Inconsistencies in her story appear. Investigations are done by the CPD and by the Columbia School of J…

I have this issue (thermostat war) in my office space, though it's all dudes...there's just this one scrawny weasel who obviously has the physiological temperature regulation of a woman, and he sits right near the thermostat. I discussed this at length with another coworker who is more on my temp level (72-73f), and here's the long and the short of it: it's infinitely easier for you warmer-temp people to warm up than it is for us colder-temp people to cool down. and women don't ask for wage increases/promotions as much as men Even more importantly, women don't go into STEM fields at the same rate as men. I've heard it explained that, on a psychological level, women are more innately nurturing (this is a biological truth), and so they tend to go into human-caring fields like nursing and teaching more often than something "cold" like engineering. So, right there, there's a biological reason for the supposed "wage gap", but nobody wants to hear that, becau…

That's too funny. I'm sure she'll be able to pad her resume with some new stuff soon...here's a few ideas for her: When men grow their hair long, they are attempting to co-opt yet another fundamental facet of womanhood. "I was walking down the street today and saw more men than woman. This city is misogynistic!" There's this one movie where an actress shows her breasts. These breasts were perfect. Ah, nobody's complaining. His most "publicized" crack was going after a known woman-abuser. It's getting all kinds of press. Who is going to complain about that? The reality is that they rarely choose "safe" hosts anymore. They're looking for relevance, and having a "cutting edge" host like Seth is good for business. People watch this stuff to see what the guy's gonna say next. You put some boring mope up there, nobody cares, nobody is talking about it the next day. Nah, these guys knew exactly …

I got maybe 2/3 through it before the lizard part of my brain forced my hand to move the mouse up to the little "X" in the tab. That was brutally awful. One of the worst things I've had the displeasure to read in quite awhile. One of the things I find most interesting (and very sad) about modern western society is that "Professional Complainer" is apparently an accepted career path. People who read deeply into every facet of society with one goal in mind: to find things to complain about...even …

The best part is how he spouts all these stats and claims about women, like... up to 80% of women in prison in the UK have diagnosable mental health problems, with 66% having symptoms of neurotic disorders. Up to 50% report of having experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse in their lives. ... If women's prisons were closed statistical evidence has proven that the vast majority of the female prison population would be of no danger to the public and would make a great saving to the public …

Libertarian or Conservative economics do not solve the problems. The free market is not going to solve unemployment, because markets don't hire based on available money, they hire based on necessity and demand of consumers. Should it be any other way? Were it not for a fiat currency system, the government could not simply create jobs. We seem to operate under this assumption that the singular goal is as many jobs as possible, but is a job really beneficial to society if it doesn't really produce…

My parents paid extra for the premium circumcision package, which includes a "sharpening" of the penis head to a point in order to facilitate easier insertion. Apparently your parents skimped and got the economy package.

Yes, it was the offense for which the cops were threatening rape. My point was simply that it is universally accepted that drunk driving is bad, and so I simply don't see what your point was other than to, in some small way, attempt to partially justify or excuse the threats. It's not like anyone was even hinting at anything like "drunk driving isn't bad"; the offense in question is completely and unequivocally irrelevant. So, lambast this subreddit for being "too argumentative" all you want, bu…

So, then, your goal, ostensibly, was to point out that drunk driving is bad. Thanks for that. I'd like to add to your pointing out the badness of obviously bad things, if I may: the holocaust was bad. dogfighting is bad. cutting off your penis for fun is bad.

Right, except that it doesn't say that. Every damn sticker/shirt/etc. says "it's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand". Again: shut up. If a "Jeep thing" is off roading and/or expensive repairs or whatever else, fine. I understand those things just fine. It's not a "Jeep thing" any more than me having arms is an "arm thing". The idea is to make it seem like you're part of an exclusive club and anyone who isn't part of that club just wouldn't understand how awesome it is, when in actuality, it's…

The first one has a grain of validity to it. I for one hate when anyone explains their otherwise unjustifiable allegiances, interests, opinions, etc. with some kind of reference to an exclusionary "club" wherein only members of said club could ever understand it. For instance, "it's a Jersey thing" or "it's a Jeep thing". No, shut the fuck up, you just don't have a good enough reason to be able to explain it to me properly. Here's the reality: if you can't explain it to another rational human be…

Why? Some of them do it as a joke. Not that I find it amusing or anything, that's just the reality of it. I used to think it was a serious place for people who seriously liked assaulting women, and I couldn't believe that it was still allowed to exist, but after actually poking around a bit in the comments, it dawned on me that it wasn't serious. Thanks for the reminder. Guys just need that extra refresher sometimes. That's why I love modern technology. I set up a daily recurring reminder on my calendar, so every day, at 4:45pm, my phone beeps and reminds me, "No Raping Tonight!" Who knows where I'd be without it!

Well, they really are just whining. I don't think Fry discredits anything, other than the implied assertion that you getting offended matters. It doesn't matter. Even if I'm 100% wrong, whether or not it offends you is irrelevant to everything. It's a meaningless appeal to emotion. Fry's dismissal of that doesn't really hinder further discussion on the matter, it just cuts short the particular vein wherein someone getting offended is actually worthy of consideration.
