Couldn't agree with this more.

Dude, most people are dtf when they're freshmen in college. It's not just a girl thing, or a "sluts" thing. Think about it - people are on their own for the first time, tons of hormones, tons of partying. It's one of the givens of college life.

I am no TRPer, but I don't think this coercion argument would hold up in a court of law. I think you're probably safe threatening the end of a relationship if someone is denying sex, legally. Not that I'm endorsing this approach!

I think you're missing the point here. The word "sluts" is derogatory and has negative connotations, unlike "ice cream."

Good for you, man. I'm all for you and your girlfriend having the relationship you want. Just don't assume that all men and women want the same thing.

Side note: sperm jacking??? That's something I have never heard of happening outside of TRP and Jerry Springer. And I am a psychologist and have heard a lot of crazy shit. I see a pattern where TRP takes extremely unusual events/behaviors and assumes them to be the norm.

You actually posted two different papers, one 2000 & one 2004, same guy but different findings.

So why can't the woman's success inspire the man to greater achievement, from your perspective? In my experience, that is certainly what happened in my relationship. I have a PhD. My husband was uncertain about what he wanted to do professionally when we first got together, but I believe my working my ass off towards my goal led him to really want to push himself. He worked and was the primary earner for several years while I was in school, and now I am working and supporting our family while he…

OK. We have very different perspectives, which is fine. I disagree with the basic assertion that women have a "thrashing emotional presence," for example, or the implication that men are rational, mature beings who must hold a relationship together despite a woman's childishness. It's hard to even know where to begin to mount an argument as, respectfully, your view (and TRP in general) seems very extreme and contradicts much of my experience I'm the world. EDIT: my experience is also not the opp…

I was just borrowing pdx_rp's language when I said "equal partnership."

This strikes me as quite hypocritical. From what I have seen on TRP, most advice regarding relationships with women is all about ignoring or downplaying her needs. She's angry? Eh, she's probably just hungry. Feed her some yogurt. She's sad? It's probably her time of the month. Or she's manipulating you. There is active, ongoing advice to treat women like children. That's an equal partnership?

I also don't know who these "most women" are that you are referring to. But I would say that my perspective as a working mom is probably quite different from yours when it comes to the topic of women and responsibility. I am the primary breadwinner and caretaker in my family (my husband attends school full-time, and we have a baby). I feel largely responsible for my family's financial, emotional, and physical well-being, and I am proud of what I do to support my loved ones. I would estimate that…

Agreed. I'd actually like to see how the statement "women tend to avoid responsibility, like children do" would go over with the millions of people who are raised by single moms.

Why? What does it say about men if we stop being shocked about rape? This seems to be implying that many men will naturally sexually abuse women if put into the same location. That's a a scary thought.

By almost every objective measure you care to name, society is not set up or run for the benefit of men. I actually enjoy these discussions and generally consider myself to be a fair and respectful debater, but a statement like this is jaw dropping to me. In one fell swoop, you appear to be ignoring or discounting decades of research across multiple disciplines. I'm not saying that men have it made, but research has WELL established that male privilege (particularly white male privilege) is an a…

Honestly? I think your best bet is to go somewhere with karaoke, take a couple of shots, maybe buy a group of ladies some shots, and sing your fucking heart out. Instant communication of confidence and way to establish public esteem. Why do you think women love dudes in bands? It's not really the talent (although that's awesome)...

I think solipsism in women only makes sense if you think about it as an extension of empathy. As many women are easily able to imagine what another might be thinking and feeling, it also comes naturally to self-monitor and adjust their own behavior based on this information. For example, a woman in a meeting may be more likely to notice that Person A seems pissed off about a comment made by Person B, and may in turn become more quiet than usual to avoid saying something that cranky Person A migh…

Respectfully, I think that this may be more a reflection of your own worldview than an objective reality. Altruism is extremely difficult to measure, and I can think of many, many, MANY examples of women helping others outside of their kinship network that may not be assessed by existing studies. I also work with primarily female nurses and social workers who are almost universally underpaid yet go above and beyond on a regular basis to help others.

I hate to say it, but I think the odds are against you if you are holding out hope for him - or anyone - to change. You either can accept him as is (and future growth is a bonus) or cut your losses. Also, the best predictor of future behavior is the past. If he has no history of being responsible and taking care of himself, it's not very likely that he will suddenly develop these qualities and become the person you are looking for. But he has shown you that you desire a creative, funny, passiona…

You nailed the heart of my question. Which is, what is it that really "works" about TRP approaches? At the core, I suspect it may be the appearance of confidence. The darker stuff that seems to be rooted in a distain for women I think may be counterproductive, and damaging to the mindset of the men. Harmful to the women, too, but at the same time I suspect that women who stick around a man who is openly condescending, etc. are already pretty damaged.

If wearing a clown costume and riding a unicycle worked to get laid guys would do that too. Lol, that may be true.

Thanks for your explanation(s), very helpful. Particularly what you said about "dread" - makes sense. Not that I advocate this approach, but I can understand the thinking behind it.

You make some very thought-provoking points here and in your other post, some of which I need to think over more deeply before responding. I think my immediate observation/question would be about what TRP seems to do to the psyches of men who really buy in and start to find success with women (perhaps for the first time). It seems that some of these men start to develop really dark, angry, hateful ideas about women and romantic relationships. As someone who clearly has a nuanced understanding of…

Thanks for sharing your experience. It really resonates with me, even though there are many differences in our background. For starters I am not a TRPers wet dream I don't think, lol. I work full-time (in a field that I love), have an advanced degree, prefer more a more modern approach to relationships (e.g., I think it's fine for dads to stay home with the kids and for moms to work, if that works best for a particular family), and am not great at anything domestic besides cooking. And I'm marri…

I think it's the young and new guys that I feel most worried about. I actually don't have too much of an inherent issue with "game" (what I know of it). I think confidence is an important asset, and if certain concepts help some guys feel more self-assurance, cool (for the most part). But some of the stuff I've seen on TRP freaks me out, for the dudes more than for women honestly. This view that women are incapable of love, for example, or the idea that women essentially must be "guarded" or the…
