I chose to get a nicer than average wedding band, rather than spending on an engagement ring.

The "three months salary" was a clever marketing campaign by a diamond company. I think this was only the norm for a rather short time, and even then, only wealthier people could afford to save that much. I have no problem with whatever ring people want, I couldn't care less about jewellery myself, and I'd rather a man had invested that money in something useful to our joint lives, such as buying our home.

Why can they not strive to complete their education and get a job, like most young people do? If they did that, they might find the rest of the puzzle starts to slot together! Saying that young men have "no hope" is ludicrous, especially in the UK, an advanced country with low rates of unemployment.

This is what is called a "cocklodger" on Mumsnet!

Nope. One thing that made me sure that my husband is the right one for me is that I have never once, not one single time, been anxious about his feelings for me.

I have one of each. Honestly, it's my daughter I worry about more, that one day she will go out into this world of pornsick misogynists, and be harmed by it in the same ways that so many of us were. In fact I think things are getting worse for young women. Obviously I will raise my son to not be one of those men, as best I can. But he is never going to have to wake up one day and realise that a large chunk of society sees him as inferior. He is less likely to have people wanting to hurt him sexu…

The word "empowering" seems to be a synonym of "oppressive" these days. Nothing that is "empowering" confers any real power.

The "milk" is not just sex though. I agree with you. There is a middle ground between the 1950s and the forever girlfriend situation. The "milk" is when you've joined your life to his, you live with him, support him like a wife, etc, but he can walk away without consequence at any time. I think you should live together before marriage, but don't do it unless he has said that he wants marriage. I even had a child before marriage.

I take your point, but it's just a saying. I take it to mean, don't give a man the benefits (not just sex) of a wife relationship if he hasn't agreed to marry you. For me, this doesn't mean don't have sex before marriage. I certainly did, with numerous partners. It means don't act like his wife if you are basically just a girlfriend with no commitment for the future.

I'm in my 40s, I grew up before we all had easy internet access. People of my age learnt how to masturbate without pornography. It isn't difficult! I don't know how all these Pornhub apologists think people managed to satisfy their "needs" before smartphones and broadband?

Goes back to the old saying, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free. Before the so-called sexual revolution, there were no men who were not "ready" to settle down after their mid-20s. Now, there are scores of women in their mid 30s having their fertile years wasted by men who still can't grow the fuck up.

Yep. Nothing will change until our unpaid labour is either paid, or half of it done by men.

In most countries, organ donation is just organ donation, then your body is returned to your family for your funeral.

We have a joint account for expenses like that. Basically, my husband pays them at the moment. My income has been extremely sporadic in recent times, small kids followed by pandemic, etc. When I do earn money, it goes into the same joint account. As part of our financial planning, we save money in my name for retirement income even if I am not earning. We also do our other savings equitably. Partly this is for tax efficiency, but it's also for fair distribution of the savings.

Yeah, between porn and gaming, they don't have time to run the world properly. Women have much more ability.

I'm not interested in jewellery so I don't have an engagement ring. I just wear my wedding ring. Didn't see the point of wasting money on it to be honest. We are not rich and the money was better spent on ensuring our financial security. A proposal was not something that matters to me either. We discussed marriage early on but then had an unexpected pregnancy. Later on, we discussed it again and set a date a couple of weeks later. For me, the actual marriage is more important than ring and propo…

He encourages people to watch filmed rape and abuse. He is literally creating a market for it.

Lefty bearded dudebros are the worst. They get to engage in misogyny whilst simultaneously circle jerking about how "progressive" they are.

I used to watch this for laughs when my husband and I were planning our own wedding. Honestly, most of those brides should have stood the groom up at the altar, but because it was televised they probably felt pressured into going ahead with the wedding.

I am not sure that it is entirely just luck, but it is going to take a long time if a shift in male behaviour is to occur. Think back 60 years or so. Being an overgrown teenager in your mid 20s was not acceptable then. Men could not just sit around watching porn and playing computer games. Women were less likely to have casual sex, and "fwb" relationships did not exist then. If a man wanted a woman, he had to actually put effort into a relationship, and commit to her. Now, I am not saying we sho…

I was lucky in so far as when I met my husband he had his own place and a child, so I could evaluate his adulting quite easily. I was in my 30s though. No man in his 20s should go straight from mommy to cohabitation. A sensible woman will not live with a man who has not had his own place first.

In my experience it is rare that a straight man will bother with the emotional labour required to establish and maintain a platonic friendship with a woman. They are only prepared to put that sort of effort in when sex is a prospect. There might be exceptions, not all men blah blah blah, but I would not bother much trying to have platonic friendships with men, as they are likely to try it on sooner or later.

If there was a different way of achieving a legal union with rights and protection, I imagine many women might prefer that to marriage, just due to the sexism inherent in the tradition of marriage. However, such an option was not available to me. By having children I have essentially become financially dependent on my husband. If we were not married I would not have equal rights over our home or our income, so marriage is good for me, personally.

Same here. I was starting my sex life in the mid 90s. As you say, boys were over the moon that they had the chance of getting some action. It is pornsickness that has done this. We need to teach our girls not to comply with this.
