Even then it was a handful of characters that had decent writing. Tyrion, Tywin, and Ned carried the first 4 seasons. Dany and all the stark children were never actually well written.

When they actually make good characters, like GoT Uhhh, maybe a poor choice there. They liked those characters even with their terrible writing.
