One would expect as you're reading it that the first part is referring to being single, but really it's referring to being married, which you get after the last few words of the joke. Another example: my mom actually should have been on one of the planes that crashed on 9/11, I think.

It's a non-sequitur. One reads it expecting a certain meaning out of the sentence but then something at the end flips or changes that expectation. Anthony Jeselnik is a great example if you want more.

Sounds similar to my upbringing. I lived a decent life in a good area but the anger and emotional abuse and not knowing what type of mood she would be in, being the scapegoat for a lot of things, the hypocrisy, shirking of responsibility, laughing at my depression.....there's just a lot of shit and it definitely impacted my self-esteem and self-confidence as it all started in high school and hasn't stopped.
