I would suggest looking into attachment theory. If you are a dismissive avoidant for example you are likely to shut down - there are quite a few deactivation strategies. I think if it applies, you can read resources online of how to overcome these, which might partially resolve how you feel.

Thank you. I'm ashamed of my response and how I've handled it as it is. It isn't and yet I can't stop crying about it.

No because one of my younger siblings tried to. At the time I messaged him because I didn't know how to handle the situation and I thought he might know how, given his authoritative nature. It wasn't really an argument, he just said that he was done and would speak the next day. Bringing that to his attention caused problems because I didn't clarify later in the evening that the situation was calm - for 2 reasons. 1. He went to bed early usually, so I didn't want to disturb him; 2. I felt upset …

Good question. I don't know. Part of it is that it wasn't as strong at first.

I see what you mean. I tried to write it politely, but these were extreme views. However, I didn't condemn them or challenge what he said. I wouldn't want to do that. I phrased my beliefs in questions and agreed with some of his less extreme views. I understand.

Thank you for this. I'll make sure to check out the resources. Thank you for expressing it constructively.

It was meant to be a mix of both, a relationship intertwined with it. He did want commitment and we wrote about it together. Your point about being that someone is very true, something that I'm trying to do better at being.

It's a bit strange. I had some stuff hidden in my bag from when I stayed at his. A younger sibling tried to look through it and was suspicious. I don't know why, I felt at a loss, I messaged him about what was going on. I said something like "I honestly don't know what to do" and left it at that before sleeping. Just under a month, but we spoke on the phone a lot - 12 hours throughout the day at one point. That's true. :(

There was no explanation as to why it didn't work. I don't hold it against him but he had a short temper and not calm in every situation.

Ouch. May I ask what comes across as annoying and self-righteous? I never nagged at him, at all. I wouldn't.

Thank you, I have a complicated relationship with religion - I enjoy it and the idea of being protected by a higher power. It's something I am easing into slowly as my circumstances begin to improve. I haven't considered saying things out loud - I think that would work better than my current solution of writing - thank you.

I love this post, thank you. The part about the no 'one' perfect man is such a good point, and so easy to forget.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
